In this 2017 NFL Draft profile, we look at the strengths and weaknesses of quarterback Chad Kelly out of Ole Miss University.

Kelly is considered a top ten quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft from many analyst and insider out there. Kelly has the skill set to be NFL ready and could be worth taking a risk on as a quarterback determined to take his career to the pro level.

For how big and tall Kelly is, he reminds many of quarterback Andy Dalton. He enters the draft at 6-foot-2 inches tall and weights in at 224 pounds. For how well Dalton plays the position, Kelly shows the same potential. He is able to keep the play going and has a strong arm.

A fun interesting fact is he is the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills.  He was released from Clemson University where he originally began his college career. He went to junior college and won a national title and was later recruited to Ole Miss.

STRENGTHS

Kelly has very good arm talent, that will be impressive to many once he is in the NFL. He is not afraid of throwing the long pass and is willing to take chances in tight coverage. He has very successful touch passes against linebackers and safeties. He stays in the pocket and is able to scramble out to try to make something out of nothing. He has a very competitive side of his game that takes him a long way.

WEAKNESSES

Like most quarterbacks in the draft, Kelly lacks the normal size of the typical quarterback in the league. He sometimes gets very lazy and can be inconsistent. He fails to find the open receiver and locks onto his target which will make the jobs of defensive backs easier in finding his check downs.

With his weak instincts of making the best decisions, Kelly saw his interception numbers sky rocket. He needs to learn how to be patient when it comes to check downs and hitting receivers at opportune times.

DRAFT DAY PREDICTION

Overall, Kelly wasn’t a well-scouted athlete because of his troubled history and inconsistency. Kelly has plenty of talent and has the chance to become a leader in this league. He still needs to work on some areas of his game that are very weak. He could possibly be drafted either as a late 1st or 2nd round pick in this year’s draft.
