Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Today will be spent with friends and family, eating and drinking and watching Super Bowl 51, commercials and the halftime show.

Although the main event is based on the biggest NFL game of the year, your crowd will be divided. Yes, many will watch the Atlanta Falcons take on the New England Patriots but, a bunch of people will be there only for the commercials, performances and the fact it’s one of the biggest social events of the year.

So how do you entertain a broad crowd? Useless information and knowledge.

5. Halftime is double time

All season long I would race against the clock trying to make it back to my seat before halftime was over. I have 12 minutes to go to the bathroom, grab a drink or food and smoke a cigarette; yes, I know not everyone smokes. Before I knew it, I had missed kickoff.

Luckily for the football fans, Super Bowl halftime is 30 minutes. That’s 30 minutes for your guests to either engulf themselves in a performance by Lady Gaga and whoever comes out to surprise us, get some food, use the bathroom and do whatever else they need.

Some more interesting but useless information is that a little over 90 million toilets will flush during Super Bowl halftime. Yes, you read that right!

I won’t turn this into a save the world ad but, one toilet uses between one and seven gallons of water per flush. That’s insane.

4. Commercials Galore

Americans have made this sporting event into a gold mine. The concerts, pre-game events, food, and commercials are more relevant than the game to some Super Bowl-goers.

Only about 10 percent of your Super Bowl party attendees will be there for the game. The NFL has found a way to include everyone on the biggest football Sunday of the year; commercials.

Commercials have become more entertaining than some of the halftime performances. Doritos even started a commercial challenge that allowed regular people to compete in a commercial making contest.

The winner takes home $1M and gets to see their ad run during the game. But, that prize is pocket change compared to how much Doritos and other companies are paying to have commercials air during the Super bowl.

During the first Super Bowl in 1967, commercials cost $42,000 for a 30-second spot. You can’t even buy one second of airtime for that price these days.

This year, companies are dishing out $5M per 30-second ad. That comes out to a little under $170,000 per second.

3. “Home” Field Advantage

Okay, so none of the Super Bowl competitors come from Texas but, there needs to be a home team. How do they choose who gets the home field advantage?

Best season record? Or, maybe it’s seasonal statistics; touchdowns, completions, interceptions? Well, it’s none of those. Despite all the hard work, both teams put in this season, performance has nothing to do with it all.

So, how did the Falcons lock in home field advantage? It’s simple. The AFC gets even numbered games and the NFC gets odds.

Its Super Bowl 51, which is an odd number, the Falcons are the designated home team. With that said, can you figure out who will be the home team next season? If you guessed the AFC team you win!

Another fun fact is that the Falcons get to choose which uniforms they will be wearing. Unfortunately, the Patriots don’t have that luxury and will be wearing their away uniform.

But, who really cares about a uniform? The Patriots being the away team get to have control over the coin toss. In my opinion, that’s much more valuable than the color of a jersey!

Did you know the Super Bowl is the second-biggest day for food consumption? It falls second to Thanksgiving. On average, viewers will spend a little over $80 on food and team swag.

According to the National Chicken Council, yes that’s a real thing, over 1.3 billion chicken wings will be consumed this weekend. And what do they dip the wings in? Ranch dressing is the most popular.

Ranch dressing beat out the old classic blue cheese. Approximately 57 percent of wings consumed will be accompanied by ranch dressing.

But wings aren’t the only show stopper. Super Bowl is the busiest day for pizzerias everywhere. Pizza Hut is expected to sell over two million pies, while Dominos gears up to sell over 12 million slices.

But it doesn’t stop there! Over 11 million pounds of potato chips, four million pretzels and two and a half million pounds of nuts will be eaten.

And what will everyone wash down all the food with? Beer! Almost 330 million gallons of beer will be drunken this Sunday. It’s no wonder antacid sales go up by 20 percent the Monday after Super Bowl.

1. Super Bowl’s next four locations

Every year the Super Bowl is held at various stadiums across the country. The amount of planning that goes into a Super Bowl is ridiculous; city-wide events, lodging, transportation, security, staff, volunteers etc. That’s why they map out the location years in advance; four to be exact.

Next year the big game will be held in Minneapolis, MN at U.S. Bank Stadium. Super Bowl 53 will be played in Atlanta, Georgia, Super Bowl 54 will be in Miami, Florida, and lastly, Super Bowl 55 will be held at the new Los Angeles stadium.

This is great for commoners like myself. If I start saving now, I may be able to make it the 2021 game is Los Angeles.
