Kevin Greene will have huge impact on Jets’ Lorenzo Mauldin

The New York Jets have been making smart new hires to their leadership team this offseason. When they officially hired Kevin Greene to be their new outside linebackers coach, it will undoubtedly impact Lorenzo Mauldin.

So far this offseason, the New York Jets have been stacking up top talent to round out their leadership team. It all starts from the top if the Jets want to return to being contenders again. When they officially announced that Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene would be their new outside linebackers coach, one can’t help but get excited about everything he brings to the table.

Greene brings a ton of experience and leadership and for outside linebacker, Lorenzo Mauldin, he will be a huge mentor showing him the ropes. It’s no secret that Mauldin is a player on the rise but fell off a bit in his sophomore season.

In 2016, Mauldin totaled just seven tackles and 2.5 sacks while dealing with a nagging ankle injury towards the second half of the regular season. He didn’t have that same speed or aggression but again, expectations were high last season but Mauldin missed a step.

Heading into his third season with the Jets, this is the true measuring stick for Mauldin to see if he can be a consistent starter down the road. Linebacker David Harris won’t play forever and once he decides to call it quits, Mauldin should be able to be the next man up. With Greene now in the mix, this will have a huge impact on Mauldin in not only growing as a player but being able to perform better where it matters most on the gridiron.

If anyone knows how to effectively pass rush, it’s Green who has amassed 160 sacks in his legendary career. He also won a Super Bowl championship with the Green Bay Packers back in 2010 as their outside linebackers coach and will bring all that great knowledge directly to the Jets and especially Mauldin.

At a time where expectations are low for next season, the Jets are doing a great job bringing in more than qualified new coaches and leadership to the team. This is a great step in the right direction since truth be told, the Jets severely lacked accountability in 2016. With a presence like Greene in the mix, this will help the Jets set a solid leadership foundation for a hopefully brighter future.
