Week 9 showed the New York Jets taking a huge step back in trying to salvage their season as they lost to the Miami Dolphins, 27-23. Once again, like in their losing streak, the Jets started off slow and were outplayed on both sides of the ball.

The Jets offense again couldn’t cash in when it was necessary and didn’t come away with points most of the time. The offense struggled and caused the defense to play more than they have been these past few games.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 3-6 and head back home next Sunday night against a very good team in the Los Angeles Rams. If they want to try to head into their bye week with a win, they must play with anger and aggression next week.
The Jets need to look at themselves in the mirror and realize they all need to step up and become a better team. They need to have a private team meeting in how to handle the adversity they have against themselves.
Let’s take a deeper look and breakdown the top five takeaways from this Week 9 matchup.
Next: 5. Jets defense makes too many mistakes

5. Jets defense makes too many mistakes
The Jets were ramped up to face Jay Ajayi but they could have been too ramped up which came back to haunt them. They had a lot of unnecessary penalties that caused many of Miami’s offensive drives to continue.
Also, they allowed a run for a 20-yard touchdown by Ajayi who has hurt many defenses this past couple of weeks. Sheldon Richardson was flagged for unnecessary roughness twice in the second quarter.
The Jets were over pursuing on each play that allowed the running and passing game to be able to execute in Miami’s way. Everyone needed to stay to their assignments and do what they are supposed to but the Jets didn’t do that.
They gave up a total of 274 yards of total offense to the Dolphins. The secondary got beat once again for 137 and the Jets defensive line gave up many rushing yards as they allowed 137 total yards as well.
Their dominant presence against the run took a big hit for how they handled the Miami Dolphins attack. The Jets must fix on how to stop the run because they will face Todd Gurley who is an explosive runner next week.
Next: 4. Offensive play calling once again a huge problem
4. Offensive play calling once again a huge problem
Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey really has to change his play calling up because it was not working like it was the past two weeks. He seems to only to only trust certain plays because you see the same plays be called over and over and you wonder in what he is thinking.
Instead of trying to run the ball and doing screen plays, maybe they should do more cross and vertical passes. Instead of trying to go for the big play, Gailey should try to just keep it basic and just go with plays that have been successful these past two games they have won.

They had called numerous plays where as a fan you shake your head in wondering why they called it. They also need to get everyone involved because they focus on the same player like they did numerous of times.
Missing Eric Decker is hurting the offense and not using Matt Forte and Bilal Powell like they did was hurtful as well. It seems that the offense Gailey has been running is not working out for the Jets. He needs to go back to the basics and they need to put up more points on the scoreboard.
Next: 3. It is time for Ryan Fitzpatrick to be benched

3. It is time for Ryan Fitzpatrick to be benched
This was once again one of the worst performances by Fitzpatrick who again looked like his old self. He once again threw two interceptions which he was trying to force too many balls into tight coverage.
The one that stood to everyone was when he tried to throw one to Robby Anderson and it was intercepted for a touchback. He also threw another interception where it was forced once again into double coverage.
He has no leadership skills and makes too many mistakes with the football. He is careless with it and doesn’t seem to look at the type of coverage he is dealing with. It is time for Bryce Petty to take over and see what he has.
Petty seems like he has the potential to be a well-rounded player who can maybe lead this team. The Fitzpatrick era is over and it’s time to start Petty who is a big quarterback that is almost the size of Ben Roethlisberger.
Next: 2. Forte and Powell need to have the ball more

2. Forte and Powell need to have the ball more
Forte has always been a reliable and successful running back throughout his entire career. The Jets now need to take advantage of this and the games they won they utilized Forte which made the offense multidimensional.
Forte was not used that way they should have been using him and it made the offense one-dimensional. Forte had a total of 92 yards and one touchdown which is not as productive as they were these past two games they have won.
Powell also had 22 yards in rushing which is not as normal because he was used for pass plays out of the backfield. Forte and Powell have the ability to be a two-headed monster if they are utilized the right way.
If they use the running game more it has worn out defenses which will allow the Jets to open their offense more. When they won their past two games they utilized the run and made the defenses frustrated. They are a run style offensive team and they need to stick to that because the passing game is frustrating to watch.
Next: 1. Jets offensive line falters once again
1. Jets offensive line falters once again
Once again the Jets offensive line didn’t get any penetration to drive back the opposing defenders. They aren’t being smart in who needs to block who and when a blitz is happening at some point.
The offensive line was not able to contain the Dolphins defensive pressure which allowed them to cash in on the Jets mistakes. They also had too many penalties brought on themselves which hurt a lot of drives that were going well.
They weren’t able to keep blitzes from coming at Fitzpatrick which almost got him put in a position to possibly get seriously hurt. They also couldn’t contain themselves from not showing their frustration.

Again, next week’s game for the Jets will be the final identity check before they finally head into their bye week. The offensive line will need to be on point because both opponents have tremendous defenses that it could make their day a complete nightmare.
