What are early expectations for C.J. Spiller on Jets?

As the New York Jets added another running back into the mix, what are early expectations for C.J. Spiller? Things should finally feel like home again for him.

Right before the 2016 NFL trade deadline came to an end, the New York Jets made some interesting moves. First, they acquired running back Knile Davis but then faster than a New York minute, released him. They decided to go in favor of C.J. Spiller. It’s odd to see the Jets add another running back at this point in time but it actually makes sense in the long term.

It’s no secret that running back Matt Forte is the perennial “workhorse” at the position and is getting a fair share of reps. His partner in crime Bilal Powell is also gaining some nice momentum. The past two games, both victories, were achieved thanks to the combined efforts of both athletes to have the Jets currently riding a two-game winning streak.

Of course, as the season progresses, injuries or a decline in play could occur at any time. Quality depth is the sign of a good team and besides Forte/Powell, the Jets don’t have that extra option to be able to step in and take care of business. Spiller is actually entering a great situation with the Jets, his third team of the season so far.

Things should finally feel like home again for him in the grand scheme of things due to his history with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Spiller thrived with him back when they were on the Buffalo Bills so it makes perfect sense that the Jets picked him up.

So far this season, Spiller has totaled just nine rushing yards, three attempts, and zero touchdowns on the ground. He does have just one touchdown this season which was as a receiving option and ironically against the Jets.

Overall, this was a good move by the Jets and possibly have found a diamond in the rough. Spiller’s best season came in 2012 under Gailey, he totaled 1,244 rushing yards, 207 rushes, and six touchdowns. As a receiving option, Spiller totaled 459 yards, 43 receptions, and two touchdowns. Expect to see Spiller do very well in the city that never sleeps, as a dual-threat option that compliments everyone else around him offensively.
