Jets are ushering a new era with final roster cuts

The final roster cuts are in for the New York Jets and the results were surprising. Clearly, a new era is being ushered in under head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan.

The last obstacle ahead of the regular season is complete for the New York Jets. The Jets made their final roster cuts and didn’t hold anything back. While the majority of the cuts weren’t very surprising, it got a lot more interesting once we got to the final moments. The Jets had to make a decision and they decided to keep four quarterbacks.

Due to that, the Jets had to take away from other positional units. Specifically at cornerback and at the tight end position. Both Dee Milliner and Jace Amaro found themselves without jobs but probably not for long. The main reason this was surprising, beyond their draft status, was the financial side of things.

The Jets went out of their way to cut these two players, in other words, the Jets paid them to not be on the team. That speaks volumes in terms of the new era that is being ushered in here with the Jets.

Back in the John Idzik days with the Jets, it would’ve been pretty status-quo to start high draft picks, regardless if they deserved it. Now with head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan, that is no longer the case.

Subconsciously this should send a message to the rest of the locker room that draft status isn’t enough to warrant roster spots anymore. Because of those cuts, the Jets could be in a precarious position.

Namely, at the tight end position, the Jets have elected to keep Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick on the final roster. But perhaps the Jets view their versatile playmaker, Quincy Enunwa, as that dual-threat tight end/wide receiver.

That would explain the Jets willingness to give up on Amaro after an injury-riddled tenure. While Juston Burris beat out Milliner fair and square.

Even when Milliner was healthy he didn’t live up to expectations. Now the Jets are moving on with their youth movement on the roster.
