The New York Jets added another linebacker to their defense with the acquisition of Bruce Carter. Thanks to everything he brings to the table, he could easily be a hidden gem heading into next season.

The Jets made a smart decision when they came to terms with Carter who is mostly known for his four seasons spent with the Dallas Cowboys. Out of all his attributes, his speed is what truly separates him from other free agent linebackers still looking for new contracts this offseason.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Carter and the Jets have come to terms on a one-year contract for an undisclosed amount. One can imagine he probably was given a moderate amount of guaranteed money to see if he can bring some much needed speed and aggression to the linebacker corps of the Jets.

In his career so far, Carter has totaled 211 tackles, 5.0 sacks and 19 passes defended. What he brings to the Jets’ defense remains to be seen but he could easily be a hidden gem thanks to again, his blazing speed and ability to take down the ball carrier. With over 200 tackles in just five years in the NFL, his stats aren’t bad at all as one can imagine the damage Carter can cause with the right system and talent around him.

More from The Jet Press

Last season, the Jets’ defense for the most part was very good. The only area of opportunity was their pass rush which makes sense why they brought in Carter to see what he’s got.

There is no doubt that he’ll have much to prove after falling off a bit last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carter’s versatility in being able to be an effective inside or outside linebacker will be a nice option to have for the Jets.

Since he’ll be competing for a starting spot this summer, he could very well end up earning starting time in a situational role since he has the experience to deliver.

Overall, Carter is a very good tackler so perhaps against opposing teams when they try to run against the Jets’ defense, he can make a name for himself.

At this point, it’s best the Jets keep adding more pass rushers to not only have more than capable starters to get the job done but also have quality depth behind them ready to step in and take care of business.
