NY Jets: What went wrong in 2015
By Jason Rodriguez
The NY Jets had a fun season that unfortunately ended on a sour note. What actually went wrong with Gang Green isn’t all that surprising at all in 2015.
This season, the Jets have surprised many by how successful they were in finishing 10-6. They were very close in clinching for a playoff berth in the AFC Wild Card. Their game against the Buffalo Bills showed a lot of areas the team will need to focus on in getting better because it cost them many games this year.
The team has the right coaches in place with the exception of Chan Gailey whose offensive game plan is too mediocre and is to repetitive in teams knowing what they were going to do. The team was hurting themselves by obtaining too many penalties that caused the offensive drives to stall and the defense to stay on the field longer.
The biggest concern is the team will be getting older, and will possibly cause them to be less effective. The Jets will need to focus on fixing the problems in their special teams because they were giving up too many yards that allowed opponents to start in good field position. This isn’t a major problem but head coach Todd Bowles made poor coaching decisions in how he handled certain things.

If you can count how many times the Jets had a chance in winning games, they would of won maybe two or three more contests. The offensive line needs to get younger and bigger.
Even though they were among the few teams to give up the least amount of sacks, the age of the line started to show as it got late in the year. Many of the games that were close, the offensive line would have a good majority of the penalties called on them which caused the team to stall on important drives.
Also in their season finale against the Bills, the offensive line couldn’t handle the Bills’ defensive line who were among the worst in the league in sacking the quarterback. The Jets’ offensive line was not giving enough time for the running backs to make plays as well as Ryan Fitzpatrick in allowing him to make throws down the field. The offensive line will need to try to be fixed because the teams they will face next season will be an even bigger problem.
The organization will need to find a better offensive coordinator because to be quite honest, Gailey was too simple in his play calling. Chan needs to open the field up and switch up the tempo of the offense. He has many play makers who he didn’t involve a lot during the games. Even though they were successful at times, they didn’t take advantage of certain opportunities. They will need to find certain play makers that can help out Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall.

Todd Bowles will learn from the mistakes he had made this season and correct them. He changed the locker rooms attitude which was a big problem under former head coach Rex Ryan. He needs to be smart in how he handles the clock and how to manage the play calling because his defense got beat for many big plays. Bowles should try to fix the schemes and make it impossible for teams to recognize. He needs to be more involved in who they bring in as a quarterback because it is a big circus when it comes to that.
More jets: Requiem for a fan of the Jets
Bowles will need to find a better coach for special teams because the opponents of 2016 will be even harder to handle. He needs to be more hands on because I feel he just focuses on the defensive side of the ball when the help is needed on each side equally. The quarterback situation will be something he really needs to have the final word on because Fitzpatrick is not the future of the franchise.
General manager Mike Maccagnan has done a real good job thus far in his first season with the Jets. He will need to build on this and continue to make this team better for the long run. He will need to try to make a big splash this offseason and continue to find young talent in the 2016 NFL Draft. These are certain areas I think the Jets will need to fix because they have a chance to do something special these next few years. The organization will need to focus on these areas and make improvements this off-season.
