NY Jets: Todd Bowles is not to blame for 5-4 record

The NY Jets are 5-4 not because of head coach Todd Bowles but due to injuries and miscommunication on defense.

The Jets lost a hard battle last week against the Buffalo Bills to the tune of 22-17. They had all the chances in the world to beat the Bills and separate themselves from the pack but failed to deliver. The better team won that day in the Bills as they were able to seal the deal by having 4 takeaways against the Jets.

Fans of the Jets have been freaking out lately, saying this season is over and that there is no way Gang Green can make a serious run this season towards the NFL Playoffs. I’ve always believed in the mantra of “any given Sunday” but I’ve even heard of fans saying that this all falls on head coach Todd Bowles.

Let me be the first to say, I absolutely love what Bowles has brought to the team so far in his tenure. Before he arrived, the Jets were a circus freak show where everything went wrong and all eyes were on owner Woody Johnson to see if he could find the right person to rebuild this franchise into a more serious contender.

In his short time so far, Bowles has done just that with the Jets. He had a summer he’d like to forget with the entire Geno Smith debacle, started the season off hot at 4-1 and then faced some obstacles and adversity along the way. All considered, I think Bowles has done well considering all the injuries that have hit his team and the Jets’ defense seemingly forgetting how to stick to their assignments while finishing tackles.

Injuries and playing hurt are normal in the NFL around this time. With about a month and change left in the regular season, everyone is hurting across the league. Bowles is still a rookie head coach at the end of the day, will need another year or so to find his stride realistically. He also needs to stock up the Jets with some quality depth behind their star players as the talent is simply not good enough to step up and not miss a beat on starting units.

Bowles is definitely not to blame for the Jets being 5-4 at this point in time. The team has that current record due to defensive woes, the running game not being consistent as it should be and losing the turnover battle. Bowles continues to keep the Jets focused as no matter what, they are prepared week in, week out to the best of their ability.

Overall, trust me when I say everything is going to be fine. With an important game coming up against the Houston Texans, one better believe Bowles will have this team ready to fight and of course, ready to win to put this season back on track. To blame Bowles for their 5-4 start is a bit premature to say the least since again, he’s also learning on the job too.
