NY Jets: Todd Bowles continues to impress through adversity

Despite a sloppy game by the NY Jets, they were able to overcome adversity and pull off a big win thanks to head coach Todd Bowles.

The NY Jets took care of business against the Washington Redskins to the tune of 34-20 and are now 4-1 on the season. It was a rather sloppy first half for Gang Green that saw them commit turnovers and seem out of sync offensively which the Redskins capitalized on every chance they got.

Good teams know how to adjust and course correct as illustrated by the Jets in the second half. One area that definitely shows just how great the head coaching style of Todd Bowles is can be seen in how the Jets fought back after he spoke to them.

One can only imagine what he told the Jets at the half that led to the team coming out strong and finishing even stronger.

Thanks to the Media Relations Department of the Jets, here is what Bowles had to say about their first half blunders and how they were able to overcome adversity:

On overcoming three first-half turnovers and generating over 470 yards of total offense…

We shot ourselves in the foot. Brandon (Marshall) was fighting for too many yards. (Eric) Decker got it punched out and a guy made a great play on the other side and got an interception. That accounted for a lot of their points, but we got it going in the second half. We shook it off. It’s not going to be easy in this league. We shook it off and got going. We made some plays in the second half and came out with the win.

On his message to the team at halftime…

I didn’t think we were playing with enough energy. We were flat. Number one, we turned the ball over. We can’t win making turnovers but we have to make stops when they get them. The message was energy, energy, energy, and see what we’re made of. The veterans were going to lead us and they did.

I’ve been a fan of the Jets since I was a young child and have seen many coaches come and go. Bowles has continued to impress me with how well he handles pressure and keeps his players in check while being able to have them bounce back when the going gets rough.

Bowles was absolutely right in telling his team that in order to succeed, you have to bring it and do it consistently. Veterans are on a team for a reason as they provide leadership, accountability and give a voice that sometimes you need to be told the blunt truth to go out there and make some plays with a chip on your shoulder because you’re not doing anything to help the cause.

Overall, Bowles is off to a great start in his rookie season as a head coach and continues to bring a great identity to the Jets. One that speaks highly about overcoming adversity no matter what team is in front of them stopping them from securing a victory. If Bowles keeps this up, he’s going to continue gaining much popularity because his style of coaching is refreshing and above all else, is working in getting the Jets to win football games.
