NY Jets: Chris Ivory backs up Brandon Marshall’s comments

The NY Jets are definitely a ground-and-pound team as Brandon Marshall recently said he believes Chris Ivory might be the best running back in the NFL. He may have been telling the truth.

Brandon Marshall called him the best running back in football. Through six weeks of football, Chris Ivory is giving us reason to believe he’s right.

As of Week 6 of the NFL season, Ivory is averaging nearly 30 more yards per game than Adrian Peterson, on one less game played. He’s already two-thirds of the way to his touchdown total from last season with 4 scores and there’s still 11 games to go.

Remember when Ivory said he’s confident this could be his first thousand yard season? Well, he’s already at 460 on the season, third most this season. He’s only 47 yards behind league leading Matt Forte on 43 less carries. And all those yards after contact; does a big enough chart for that exist?

Granted, Ivory runs behind an impressive offensive line and much of his success is due to such great play up front. The schedule hasn’t been particularly tough either, although that will change with a Week 7 matchup against the New England Patriots at Foxborough.

The Patriots’ defense isn’t exactly intimidating, giving up 355 yards per game and 20.6 points per. If the defensive can limit Tom Brady, a feat no team has accomplished this year so far, Ivory will pick up another 100+ yard game. If he’s on your fantasy team, he should be starting, no questions asked.

Of course the final variable in Ivory’s continued success is his health, which is a big concern when he runs like he does. He’s already missed a game this season with a groin injury and his violent style of running invites all sorts of possible scenarios. While the Jets have looked great through the air, Marshall has four straight 100+ yard games, Ivory still figures to carry a significant workload. The Jets must limit turnovers like the kind committed by both Marshall and Eric Decker; Ivory’s burden grows with each mistake made through the air.

So through Week 6, is Ivory the best back in the NFL? He may very well be, Marshall has even more reason today to stand by his bold comments.
