NY Jets: Smoke starts to clear on Sheldon Richardson

With the return of Sheldon Richardson to the NY Jets, the smoke is starting to clear that his potential is worth investing in rather than causing off-the-field distractions.

Defensive end Sheldon Richardson learned the hard way that during the off season that even if you are a Pro Bowl defensive linemen, you need to be focused.  This Jet had much turbulence, resulting in a four-game suspension.  Check it–he flunked a marijuana test, which for the most part takes place at the same point of OTAs every year, and later being arrested for erractically driving 143 MPH with a loaded gun and passengers in in the car with him.

The first action resulted in the four-game suspension, and the later is still up in the air.  The Jets already have an incredible defensive line and have performed rather well without him.

Richardson is showing maturity with a smile on face as he returns, perhaps showing growth and humbleness.  He is ready to try to be a role model and represent not only himself but the Jets.

The defensive line is made up of five high caliber defensive linemen. As a unit, they could be the best in the sport.  With the return of Richardson, all would be on the field in the same game. Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson and Damon Harrison, Leger Douzable and Leonard Williams are some of the best defensive linemen this team has had since the New York Sack Exchange era.

Even though he’s doing well so far as a rookie, I’m sure that Williams will be able to also learn a lot from Richardson.  The Jets are excited to bring back the extra weapon to continue fielding a top defense.  There is no doubt that lessons were learned and head coach Todd Bowles is there with open arms.

Richardson’s return could not come at a better time, Wilkerson is recovering from a rib injury and the Jets have an upcoming game against the Washington Redskins in Week 6 action before the Jets take on their AFC East rival New England Patriots in Week 7.

Richardson also knows that after all his major mistakes, he must play hard and prove his worth in this contract year.  With the suspension and emergence of Williams, everyone knows he can be replaced.  He knows he must get used to being in those cleats and get out there, play hard.  What more can I say, play hard or go home, Richardson is coming to play for redemption and to regain the trust of those that hold his future career with the Jets in their hands.

He has learned the feeling of being a near MVP to not playing on a single down all in the relatively same span of time.  Do not underestimate this beast, he knows he messed up and will definitely play with a chip on his shoulder.  With the Jets 3-1, Richardson is pumped more than ever to give whatever it takes in the 12 remaining games.

There is no doubt in my eyes that Richardson loves his teammates and he is ready to get back to work.  With the first quarter of the season complete, Richardson is hungry and will more than likely make several quarterbacks very nervous after they heard his suspension is over.
