NY Jets: Predictions for a big win in Week 6
By Paul Newbold
The NY Jets have yet to play a flawless game of football en route to a big win over an opponent, this particular week could break the mold if they come out swinging for the fences against the Washington Redskins.
Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins come to MetLife stadium this week to face off against our beloved NY Jets. The Jets stand at 3-1 coming off their bye week and are on a roll after posting a big 27-14 victory against the Miami Dolphins. In contrast, the Redskins stand at 2-3 and are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Atlanta Falcons 25-19.

This week, I’m predicting the Jets to come out strong and notch up another game in the win column. While some fans are warning of the possibility that the Jets come out flat off the bye, with Todd Bowles at the helm, I see little concern of that happening.
In fact, I’m going to stick my neck out on the line and predict an easy win for the Jets this weekend. Let me tell you why.
First off, the Redskins are a terrible road team, and they make the long trip to the big apple to face our team. The Redskins have already made two such trips and the results were fairly large losses to the New York Giants and the Atlanta Falcons. The first game in New York, saw the Giants beat them 32-21, followed two weeks later with the loss against the Falcons. The Redskins don’t travel well, they are winless on the road in 2015 and the Jets will look to make it another road loss for this team.
Next up, the Jets’ run game featuring Chris Ivory will have an absolute banner day against a Redskins’ defense that has proven porous against the run. In the first quarter of the 2015 NFL season, the Redskins have allowed opposing rushers 488 yards of offense on 112 attempts for a whopping 4.4 yard per carry average.
The Jets’ offensive line has played well in the run game and I see no reason why they shouldn’t be able to control the line of scrimmage and open holes for Ivory. Since Ivory runs with violence and the offensive line will continue blocking well for him, I’m expecting a big day for the Jets’ workhorse on Sunday.
Cousins comes to town with a bit of a controversy surrounding him. The Redskins’ signal caller is once again struggling with his interception rate, and fans out west are losing faith. Cousins has thrown 6 interceptions on this young season, but they have been the kind of turnovers that want to make you pull your hair out if you are an offensive coordinator.
Cousins has thrown for 1,224 yards and 5 touchdowns this season, but his knack for turning the football over has shot his team in the foot. I expect the Jets to shut down the Redskins’ run game down early, leaving Cousins to throw the football more often than he would like, and the results will not likely be good for the embattled quarterback.

The Jets’ defense should have it’s way with the Redskins. With the return of Sheldon Richardson to the lineup this week I wholeheartedly believe the big guy will be out to make Jet fans forget his off field issues with his play on Sunday. The Jets’ defensive secondary is at full strength once again, with both Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis healthy after the bye week. This secondary has played at a very high level of competency so far this season, they have already posted 6 interceptions on the young year and they will be out to pad their stats against Cousins and his offense.
The Jets’ offense should have a big game against the Redskins as well. The Jets’ offensive line should be able to control the line of scrimmage, allowing their running backs to hit the holes at full speed. The Redskins are allowing opposing offenses to average 97 yards per game on the ground and I’d expect the Jets to do much better than that on Sunday. Expect a big day from a healthy Ivory and for Bilal Powell to have his share of success as well.
We’ve seen what the Jets’ receiver corps are capable of as well, and the Jets return to game action with a much healthier stable of receivers. Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall, Devin Smith, Jeremy Kerley and Chris Owusu all appear healthy and ready to take it to the Redskins’ defense. Opponents have averaged 235.8 yards of passing offense per game against the Redskins’ defensive secondary and put up 7 touchdowns so far this season. This talented set of receivers should have very little trouble moving the ball this Sunday.
The Redskins aren’t a terrible football team by any means. Their offensive line has played fairly well with the addition of rookie Brandon Scherff. Cousins has seen his share of pressure and has been allowed to be sacked 6 times this season. Their defense also has 12 sacks on the season and they will look to bring the pressure to bear on Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The Jets will be wise not to overlook the Redskins this week, they have the potential to score points and they could be a threat if Gang Green allows them to stay in the game. I’m predicting for the Jets to come out and jump out to a lead early in this one. If they can force the Redskins to abandon the run and force Cousins into a throwing festival, the Jets will win this one going away.
The combination of playing from behind, and facing a fierce Jets’ defense will prove to be too much for the Redskins to overcome. Jets win at home easily 35 -14 much to the delight of the home crowd in attendance to continue rooting for this team to have major success this season.
