New York Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick discusses Week 3 loss

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick gave up three interceptions in the first loss of the season for the New York Jets. While he had some good moments in this Week 3 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, truth of the matter is you can’t commit that amount of turnovers and expect to leave victorious.

We here at The Jet Press would like to thank the Media Relations Department of the Jets for sending us a complete transcript of what Fitzpatrick thought about his performance and much more. Enjoy!

On how difficult it was not having Chris Ivory and Eric Decker

I think we felt confident going into the game with the guys we had in the huddle and everybody was competitive out there and played hard. I thought (Jeremy Kerley) JK stepped up and made some nice catches today. I just like the way he plays, he’s tough, he’s competitive out there and Bilal (Powell) is the same way. So, we look back at this game and it has nothing to do, I I don’t think, with the guys that didn’t play, it was the guys that were out there and us (the) offense making too many mistakes and turning the ball over four times and all that stuff.

On if there is a physical element of the running game that was missing without Ivory

I think we fell behind a little bit, ended up throwing it a lot more in the second half, had a hard time getting anything going in the first half. So I think it was just compounded more so by the score in the second half than anything.

On what it’s like to play a game where the team is down early in the game

You have to keep your composure and certainly the turnovers didn’t help. You just have to try and take it one drive at a time and not panic knowing that each drive only ends in seven points if it’s successful. You can’t get 14 or 21 back and so there’s still got to be an element of patience with the confidence in the huddle. I think at times today, whether it was plays by me or other guys, I think we lacked a little bit of that patience.

On the last interception

It was tough. Like I said, we can’t give them the ball and I thought that we had plenty of chances there in the fourth quarter, especially after the turnover created by our defense, to kind of go out there and maybe continue the momentum and who knows what happens there. Yeah, the two interceptions, they hurt us.

On what he saw during the play when he threw the last interception

That was the one on the sideline, correct? (Yes). I mean it was just kind of an out route type throw to Brandon (Marshall) on the sideline. Just ended up kind of getting deflected and the safety came over and made a nice catch.

On what happened when his throw got deflected

Kind of got hit, I don’t know if it was my arm or the ball, kind of as I was throwing (I) moved around the pocket a little bit and I might have created a problem for myself there with the way that I moved. Those are the ones that are unfortunate, those that happen and I’ve got to go back and look at (film) and see what I can do to prevent that.

On if he got hit before he released the ball

I don’t remember if it was exactly hitting before I released it, or hitting as I was releasing it or them just batting it down. I do know that I kind of moved in that direction before I set up and tried to throw.

On how disappointing this loss is

Yeah, I think more so than the 2-0 start, just being at home, having the crowd in it, you could kind of feel the buzz and the excitement pregame and with the white out and all that stuff, to come out and disappoint them, it’s tough. Now we know that we’re not going to go undefeated this year with the loss and we’ve just got to continue to put our head down and work and work and don’t let this affect us in a negative way. Just continue to get better and continue to put in the work and hopefully we’ll just see the results.

On throwing 58 passes and if that’s the most he’s thrown in a game

Probably. There’s a lot of things today that circumstances kind of made us throw more and all that. But, the winning formula for us is not going to be turning the ball over and throwing it 58 times, I think we know that. So, we’ve got to play a better game, a smarter game and everybody on offense can contribute to that.

On if having Coach Bowles’ confidence by declaring him as the quarterback means something to him

Like I said, I’m going to be same guy every day. This, coming off of a loss like this and feeling the disappointment of going out there and turning the ball over and not putting up enough points. I thought our defense played well enough for us to win the football game, all that’s just motivation to just continue to climb that hill and continue to try to get better as an offense and as a player, for me.

On if he thought not having Ivory and Decker affected the outcome of the game

Those are guys, obviously, when they’re out there, they’re great players for us, but we were able to put in some stuff to highlight the other guys that were playing.
