The New York Jets got handed their first loss of the season by the Philadelphia Eagles to the tune of 24-17. The first half was a complete disaster as the Jets couldn’t find the right answers and created too many turnovers that the Eagles capitalized on.
Head coach Todd Bowles had much to say about this tough loss. Thanks to the Media Relations Department of the Jets, they sent us a complete transcript of what he had to say immediately after the game. Enjoy!

On the Jets apparent lack of urgency once the team got behind 24-0
They were trying. You have to give Philly credit. They made some good plays. They had a good game plan. You can’t turn the ball over four times. They beat us at our own game. We turned it over four times and they turned it over once.
On the decision not to play RB Chris Ivory
He warmed up and said he could play. He missed a lot of practice time during the week. We thought it would be better to go with the other two guys to make sure he was full speed next week.
On the injury to OL Willie Colon
His knee.
On whether not having Ivory hurt the run game
No, I don’t think so. Bilal (Powell) and (Zac) Stacy are two good running backs. They had a good game plan. They made some plays. They were determined to stop the run. They did a good job against us.
On the attempted lateral pass by WR Brandon Marshall
He knows he can’t make that play. We both know he can’t make that play. He can’t pitch the ball. He understands that. He knows that. We can’t have those types of plays during the game. Can’t do it.
(follow-up)
On whether he spoke to him personally and if he seemed to understand
Yeah. He understood. It was a play too late but he understood.
On whether not having WR Eric Decker was a hit to the offensive production
I don’t know if it was a hit. The other two guys got a chance to play. They did some good things. I’ll look at the film to see how they did overall blocking, assignment-wise. They did everything they did. Anytime you’re missing one of your better players, you’re going to take a hit either way. We have a lot of depth at that position. Those two guys didn’t do a bad job.
On the play of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
Three interceptions. You can’t turn the ball over. That goes without saying. Whether they get tipped or anything like that, we know we can’t turn the ball over. You’re not going to win a game throwing three interceptions.
On his message to the team
It’s long season. They played better than us. Give the Eagles credit. They came in here to play. We played hard but just didn’t play smart at times. We didn’t make enough plays, but it’s a long season. The same way we won two games, we were not going to get too high, and when we lose one game, we’re not going to get too low. We’re going to correct mistakes, figure it out this week and move on.
On if the Jets offense was sluggish in the first half
I don’t know if we were sluggish. We just didn’t make any plays. They made plays and we didn’t. We didn’t make many in the second half, either.
On whether Fitzpatrick’s balls being batted down at the line is a concern
He’s fine. When you push linemen that far back into the quarterback, you’re going to have some batted down balls. At the same time, he has to find windows to throw through as well. It’s a combination of both.
On how big Fitzpatrick’s interception following the fumble recovery was
It was big. It was kind of a momentum changer. We thought we had a shot then, but then to turn it right back over, it just kind of dashes hope a little bit. But we had our chances and we didn’t take advantage of them.
On why CB Darrelle Revis was not in the final drive
He tweaked his hamstring so he didn’t finish.
On the severity of Revis’ injury
I don’t know yet. I’ve got to go back inside.
On the punt return for a touchdown by Eagles RB Darren Sproles
He’s a heck of a player. We missed a lot of tackles and we knew going in they scored seven (special teams) touchdowns last year that that couldn’t happen and it happened. You’ve got to give him credit, he broke a lot of tackles and made that run.
On if Revis’ injury was to his hamstring
From what they told me, hamstring.
On struggling to defend the run
In the first half especially, they creased us a few times. Guys missed. We missed some things we shouldn’t have missed that we corrected in the second half but it was too late by then.
On throwing 50 times not being what they want to do on offense
No, it’s not. When they crowd the run game, you want to throw the ball some. When you’re behind, you have to throw it mostly and that played into it as well. We weren’t going to come back from a 24-nothing deficit just running the football. So, there are going to be times where it swings both ways.
On if they miss Ivory’s physicality
No, his running is a little different than Bilal (Powell)’s, but (Zac) Stacy has a physical element as well, as well as Bilal. You’re just used to that kind of downhill game. We’ve got to create holes for them as well.
On how the routine will change when going to London
Wednesday and Thursday will stay the same. Obviously, with the travel and the time change and everything, that will have a lot of affect one way or the other from a sleep-pattern standpoint and time change. But we’re going to try to stay as normal as possible.
On if there was one thing that frustrated him the most about today’s performance
We turned the ball over and we didn’t take advantage of plays. There were a bunch of things. That we didn’t get our run fits right in the first half. We just didn’t make enough plays. We gave up a special teams touchdown.
On linebackers struggling to defend wheel routes
He got beat. He knew it was coming and he got beat.
On Sproles dropping a potential touchdown on a wheel route
He got beat on the first play for a touchdown. The second one was incomplete. There’s no issue there. Sproles is a good player. They get paid money. They’ve got to play it better.
On if QB Geno Smith could move up the depth chart in the future
Ryan’s our starter.
On if Smith was the backup quarterback today
Yes.
