New York Jets: Player news and notes from Todd Bowles

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Jets have another major opportunity to truly make a name for themselves entering their Week 3 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. They can go 3-0 for the first time in quite a while and take advantage of an Eagles team that has no idea what kind of identity they are trying to establish.

We here at The Jet Press would like to thank the Media Relations Department of the Jets for sending us a complete transcript on what head coach Todd Bowles had to say about the latest player news and notes on the current state of the team. Enjoy!

On player injuries…

(Chris) Owusu obviously didn’t practice, (Chris) Ivory didn’t practice, (Eric) Decker didn’t practice. (Trevor) Reilly didn’t practice and (Darrin) Walls didn’t practice. (Darrelle) Revis was limited, Willie (Colon) was limited, (James) Carpenter was limited, (Lorenzo) Mauldin was full practice and everybody else practiced.

On the status for Sunday of the players who are injured…

Decker and Ivory will be a game time decision. Revis, barring anything, he’s getting better, he’s still sore and we’ll warm him up on Sunday and see how he does as well.

On if Reilly is out for Sunday…

Reilly is out.

On if Mauldin will play…

Mauldin had full practice, he’ll play.

On if he will play for sure…

Yes.

On if Walls is out for Sunday…

Yes.

On if he has made a decision on Devin Smith regarding playing Sunday…

It all depends on Decker on gameday.

On Walter Powell not practicing today…

Yeah, he had an abdomen (issue). He missed a day. His abdomen was sore, so we held him out.

On the possibility of bringing W. Powell up from the practice squad for Sunday…

Since he’s pretty sore, probably not.

On if he has decided who the number two quarterback will be this week…

Not yet. I’m going to meet with Chan (Gailey) and Kevin (Patullo) when I get out of here.

On the play against the Colts where Donte Moncrief scored with Antonio Cromartie covering him…

He covered him fine. He ran a jerk route, he stopped and looked in the backfield and the guy got away from him. He had him covered on the initial route, he stopped and he looked up and the guy got away from him. Moncrief made a good play.

On what he would like his players to do on the line during press coverage…

There’s receivers that you won’t touch. Sometimes you jam, sometimes you play a slow press technique which means don’t press. Depending on where your help is, we have different ways of doing things. He covered him fine at the line of scrimmage. He got away from him at the top end of the route.

On if Decker, Ivory and Revis are game time decisions…

Yes.

On if he feels pretty good about Revis playing…

He’s getting better. It’s just a matter of how much better he gets.

On if Revis will be listed as questionable or probable…

Questionable right now.

On if Ivory and Decker will be listed as questionable…

Yes.

On if Ivory has two separate injuries…

No, he has one. He has a quad (injury).

On if Ivory’s groin injury is healed…

Yes.

On if he will counter the Eagles aggressive defense by using screen plays…

I’m not going to give away the game plan. We know they’re aggressive. We’ll adjust accordingly.

On if D. Smith doesn’t play if Decker plays…

He’s still in the mix even if Decker does dress.

On if he would put D. Smith as a gunner…

If he’s up, he was a good gunner in college. If he’s up, that’s something he can do.

On what areas they are still looking to improve upon in the secondary…

I still think they’re still getting to know each other. They’re getting a lot better, they’ve gotten a lot better. But the communication has to be continuous the whole year. Obviously, the fundamentals, the technique stuff has to be cleaned up on certain situations, so we’re just going to keep working a it.

On a play last game where Revis left his man to help cover the tight end with Jaiquawn Jarrett…

I don’t recall the play you’re talking about. I don’t recall the play. We have a bunch of different coverages where he could help and somebody should be underneath or it could have been him, but I honestly don’t recall the play. I’ll look at it and let you know, but I don’t recall the play at this time.

On how Jeremy Kerley looked in the slot at practice throughout the week…

He’s gotten a bunch of reps, we know Jeremy can play. It’s just a matter of getting his shot to play, but he looked good.

On what he expects from D. Smith in order to have a good game Sunday if he plays…

He’s got to do his job. I’m not expecting anything. If he’s out there, if everybody’s out there, he just has to do his job.

On if you have to lower your expectations for D. Smith because it’s his first game in the NFL…

He’s played a lot of big time football. He was at Ohio State, so it shouldn’t be that big of deal. It’s big because it’s his first regular season game, but Devin is a smart guy, he’s a tough guy. If he plays, he’ll do his job.

On if he will have D. Smith on a pitch count…

If he plays, he may be on a pitch count.

On if he expects to play the Eagles offense that was predicted to be explosive this season…

We know they’re explosive. You don’t worry about the first two games. The season is young, we don’t worry about the first two games. We know they’re an explosive football team and we’re preparing for the best one.

On how Colon’s knees have been holding up…

They’ve been holding up fine so far.

On giving Colon rest days throughout the week…

Yeah, he’s going to need that.

On if D. Smith’s ribs are completely healed…

I won’t know until he gets hit. He says he’s fine, but he hasn’t been hit yet, so we’ll see.

On if the consideration to activating D. Smith is physical or a numbers game…

It’s not physical, it’s just a matter of numbers, who we want up and who we want down.

On if that was the case last week with D. Smith…

He was physically ready to play last week, correct.

On if he has any idea what D. Smith’s pitch count will be…

I have to find out if he’s playing first and then the pitch count will go from there. It all depends on whether Decker plays or doesn’t play, whether he plays or doesn’t play, whether he has a pitch count or doesn’t have a pitch count honestly.

On what he noticed from Geno Smith this week…

He was sharp, he has fresh legs. He was sharp, he threw the ball around. He picked up, got into a lot of the offense from meetings and stood in there and he made some good throws.

On if G. Smith looks behind at all…

Behind as far as game plan repetition, maybe here and there. But, from the core overall offense he looks fine.

On having veterans in key positions on your team helps…

It helps to have veterans that can play, number one, then it helps to have veterans that know how to work and understand that you can’t get too high or too low. We’ve all suffered our share of losses, we understand it’s early in the season and we have a long way to go. From that standpoint, yes.

On if Ryan Fitzpatrick is the epitome of the type of veteran just described…

Ryan is very professional, he’s very funny, but he’s very professional and the guys take to him very much. He’s a good leader.

On if he’s happy about the recent play of Temple…

Ecstatic (laughter).
