New York Jets: Todd Bowles discusses Week 2 injuries

The New York Jets are heading into their Week 2 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts with a few key injuries. Expect to see a solid game from both teams even though the Jets might be without cornerback Antonio Cromartie, which means it’s an area of weakness on the Jets’ defense that Andrew Luck will more than likely want to test.

Thanks to the Media Relations Department of the Jets, they sent us here at The Jet Press a complete transcript on the latest injuries heading into Week 2 and much more directly from head coach Todd Bowles. Enjoy!

On if Antonio Cromartie was able to practice today…

He was limited. He did some things, but he didn’t do a lot. He’ll do a little bit more tomorrow.

On if Cromartie will play on Monday…

I have to see a little more.

On if he thinks he will see more from Cromartie to determine if he will play…

I don’t know, I’ll see. I don’t know, I really don’t. I have to see him run side-to-side and cut and do all those types of things.

On how much Cromartie was able to do in practice…

He was very limited.

On Devin Smith

He had a full practice today. He practiced well, he had a full practice. It’ll come down to game day and see where he fits in the game plan and see if we can use him this week or not.

On if D. Smith will be active…

It will come down to game day.

On what would cause him to make the call to go for two-point conversion…

Obviously, if you miss an extra point or if you need two to win or something like that, but for me it would probably be a weather change for the most part. You get in Green Bay, Buffalo and Chicago and it’s 10, 12 below and that wind’s swirling that field goal looks a little bit different. So, right now I don’t think, other than normal circumstances we probably won’t.

On if Darrin Walls will not play on Monday…

If he doesn’t go tomorrow, he probably will be.

On Colts defensive linemen David Parry

He’s tough. He’s tough, he’s big. He’s quick. He’s got movement. He uses his hands well. Every week, there are no scrubs in this league. They’ve got a good defense. Buffalo beat them pretty good, but they have a good defense. We’re playing them at home. I liked the guy coming out, I thought he was a good ballplayer and he’s going to help them a lot.

On if the coaching staff has made a decision on who will play inside and outside in the secondary if Cromartie can’t play Monday…

We’ve settled on it.

On on who will play the corner position if Cromartie can’t play Monday…

I’ll tell you on Monday (laughing).

On what it’s like to prepare for Colts Andrew Luck…

It’s a nightmare. I mean, he does so many things well and everybody keeps forgetting that it’s not just him, they’ve got great receivers, they’ve got great running backs and tight ends and they’ve got a good offensive line. Preparing for them as a whole, then trying to concentrate on him is kind of hard sometimes because, like I said, he can beat you with his arm, he can beat you with his feet, he can beat you with his brain. We just have to play sound fundamental football and try to slow him down a little bit.

On how people don’t typically see Luck as a quarterback who extends plays…

No, he can run. He can run and he’s a big guy so he’s not going to go down easy. If he decides to run, he runs well.

On how to defend Luck…

Every game is different. You try to get a feel for what they’re trying to do to you first, then you try to adjust accordingly. The first two or three series will tell a lot and that can either ramp you up or that can scale you back depending on how the game’s going. It’s kind of a chess match in the beginning.

On what it’s been like to work with Mike Maccagnan composing the roster…

Mike’s been outstanding. He has a good feel for the guys, he has a good feel for players in general, as well as the overall management of what we have to do in the building. Everything he does is for the good of the team. He can see things that I may want to say to him and I’ll say something to him and he can tell me before it happens. We’re always on the same page, he’s been great to work with.

On if Maccagnan’s scouting background plays into the interactions he has with him…

I mean he’s out on the road more than I am, so he can always give me insight to a player of something that I haven’t seen other than the film and get us a better feel for what we’re getting if we decide to sign that player.

On if he has a philosophy on starting rookie quarterbacks…

It all depends on the guy and the situation. If he can learn and he comes along fine, you can start him. If he doesn’t and you can afford to sit him, you sit him.

On if he would prefer to sit a rookie quarterback if he had the luxury…

If I had the luxury, I probably wouldn’t take one (laughing).

On if there is any change to Geno Smith’s timeline…

No change. He’s throwing out there and he’s just going through the process right now and it’s going to take a while.

On what G. Smith did in practice yesterday that he wasn’t doing before…

He throws individual and he throws some 7-on-7 scout team.

On if G. Smith has been throwing in team period…

Not yet.

On if G. Smith had been doing 7-on-7 drills prior to yesterday…

No, he’s just been individual.

On if G. Smith will travel…

Yes.

On if he has all injured players travel…

Not all injured, all active injured guys travel. PUP guys probably won’t.

On what happened to David Harris in the last game…

He got poked in the eye.

On if he thinks the Colts are faster at home because of the home turf or is it because they are a more confident team…

I don’t know. I think they play well for the most part. You don’t win the division that many years and not play well overall. Whether they’re at home or on the road, I think they play well. They got stunned last week, we’re expecting the playoff team come this Monday night.

On if he is concerned about Chris Ivory’s groin issue…

Not at this moment, no.

On if Ivory’s groin issue came from the game or in practice…

It was a practice deal.

On if he expects Ivory to be fine for Monday…

Yes.

On if undrafted players like Damon Harrison are simply overlooked during the draft or if there is development that takes place once they are on a roster…

That’s a hard question. Sometimes it’s development that takes place and you have a guy you bring in. Sometimes they come in and they play right away. Sometimes, depending on the scheme you’re running, you see different things in guys and say ‘Well, he can do this” and then they come in and because of their work ethic they get to where they are. (Damon Harrison) Snacks is a unique individual. He works hard. He understands everything, he believes in himself. He doesn’t take anything for granted and he comes to work every day. I guess over the years he developed and made himself into a good football player.

On what went wrong for the Colts against Buffalo…

I can’t tell you exactly what went wrong. I don’t know what they were trying to accomplish schematically, but watching the film they made a few mistakes and Buffalo made a few plays. I mean it happens, we made some mistakes in our game and Cleveland made some plays. Once you get behind, it’s hard to come back and Buffalo got on a roll. But, they’re a quality team and they’re very prideful guys and we’re sure we’re going to get their best.

On Lorenzo Mauldin’s progress…

He’s still day-to-day and week-to-week right now, but he’s seeing a little better.

On what he saw when Mauldin was injured…

I didn’t see it either. I had to think that the camera had to move away from it to see it because when I watched it on film I didn’t see what made him lay there like that and once the ball got recovered and ran, the projector ran and I don’t know what happened after that, but I didn’t see it on film. When it happened, I didn’t see it.

On if Mauldin has talked about what he can remember from the injury…

No, we didn’t talk about that. At that time I saw him, we were just trying to make sure he was okay and make sure he’s getting proper rest.

On if Mauldin was having vision problems…

Not see, but from the concussion and everything else when the way he fell it looked like he couldn’t see and his eyes were blurry. He didn’t have any vision problems. He’s fine.

On if Mauldin is still wearing eye shades…

Yes.
