New York Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick breaks down offense
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick of the New York Jets certainly looked a lot more comfortable when he led the first-team well against the Atlanta Falcons in their preseason Week 2 match-up. Fitzpatrick went 13/19 for 118 passing yards for a 85.0 passer rating. His rhythm with Brandon Marshall is getting more and more in sync as it should be able to continue keeping those chains moving.
Thanks to the Media Relations Department of the Jets, we here at The Jet Press were able to get a full transcript on what Fitzpatrick thought of the first-team offense, how the offensive playbook of Chan Gailey is and more. Enjoy!

On the offense’s performance tonight…
I think it was an up-and-down performance. It was nice to get the touchdown at the end. It’s certainly always a great experience, to have it be a preseason game, to go against an opponent that does some different things on defense that we don’t see every day and have to do try to go out there and execute our basic plays that we had in this game. I feel like, personally, I missed a few plays in my reads. There’s a lot of things I think I can learn from and get better from with my performance. We’ll look at the film. Against a team like that, the penalties are going to kill you, too. There’s definitely some room to grow after that performance but it was nice to get the touchdown at the end.
On if it was disappointing the touchdown was not against their back-ups…
No, not at all. When we’re out there, we are out there trying to score and we’re playing hard so it doesn’t really matter who’s on the other squad or who’s out there for them. It’s all about us going out there and executing. I thought it was a step in the right direction in terms of getting to go out there and getting to work through some adversity and a couple three-and-outs and stuff not going our way and just come back and put one up.
On developing a rhythm with Brandon Marshall…
I think that’s important in these preseason games to get him some targets, get him going against different corners and different looks. I think that’s important for everybody across the board. But especially with him, we’ll obviously lean on him a lot this year so it was good to get some throws to him. A lot of it was just stuff with him working short today, but I thought he did a good job.
On if Chan Gailey was making an effort to work the passing game…
Not really. I don’t know if we came into the game thinking that, but the first series we ran it a few times and didn’t have a lot of success. I think we felt like ‘hey let’s spread them out and try to get different guys involved.’” At the end, I thought we ran the ball well so I think it was more the flow of the game, the way the first series went where we tried to spread them out a little more.

On how much of spreading it to multiple receivers was because there were injured tight ends…
Yeah, you know personnel plays a big part in it so being thin in some areas obviously we’ve got more receivers than anything and that’s something you have to deal with in the preseason as well.
On the running backs…
They’re going to be huge for us. I haven’t seen those guys play in live action a ton, but I thought it was great to see them run the ball tonight like they did.
On the impact of the penalties…
I think we need to do a better job of that, a better job of avoiding them and then when they do happen, getting big chunks and then converting on those third downs. We could have done a better job of that. That’s going to be a big thing for us this season is being able to stand on the field and overcome some of those penalties.
