New York Jets: Bryce Petty breaks down his performance

facebooktwitterreddit

Quarterback Bryce Petty showed much more signs of understanding the offense of the New York Jets in his second preseason game as a member of the team. Against the Atlanta Falcons, Petty ended the night passing 12/19 for 168 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions posting a 109.1 passer rating.

Petty looked much more comfortable with executing and had fans of the Jets thinking that if he can continue to develop the right way, could possibly one day down the road be considered an option as a starting quarterback. It might not be this season but perhaps in another year or two, Petty could definitely be in the hunt for the starting quarterback position of the Jets.

We here at The Jet Press would like to thank the Media Relations Department of the Jets for sending us a transcript on how Petty broke down his performance, penalties and even what it is like working alongside new quarterback Matt Flynn. Enjoy!

On why he seemed to be more poised tonight…

Just experience. I think last week I had no idea what to expect as far as the game goes, as far as myself personally and emotionally, how it would roll and so I felt like coming in to this week I would have a better understanding of how things went down and how things worked. I felt a lot more comfortable out there. There was definitely progress as far as where I was last week to this week so that’s good.

On looking more comfortable tonight…

Thank you. I appreciate that. That’s the plan. It’s progress every week and that’s what I got to keep telling myself, every day, to get better, and every week to get better. I can’t get complacent, I can’t get happy about this. I have to get back in there in the film room and go to work. I still have to get better at decision making. I think especially situationally in the red zone I have to throw catchable balls that only our guys can catch and allow us to score points and not put ourselves in jeopardy down there. We’re learning.

On the penalties tonight…

Yeah, you know I think that as a team we have to focus small and we’ll get better at that. It’s the second game. Things like that are going to happen, but at the same time we have to fix those so that we can win because I think we had 17 penalties tonight and if you have that it’s going to be really tough to win games. We have to focus small and that will clean itself up.

On the Jets bringing in a veteran quarterback…

Yeah, you know for me, it’s just another guy to learn from. In that QB room there are two guys that have thrown for six touchdown passes in the game in the NFL, so they have something to offer. Matt (Flynn) is another guy to learn from, just like Fitz (Ryan Fitzpatrick) is, so it’s great for me.
