Head coach Todd Bowles was recently speaking to the Media Relations Department of the Jets in regards to the game and other various topics across the team. Here is what he said in its entirety:

On Geno Smith’s performance…

Well, it’s practice. The defense started fast and they ended slow. The offense started slow and they ended fast. He did some good things at the end. When guys weren’t open early, he has to get rid of the ball, he has to learn to tuck the ball. Overall practice day, he showed progress throughout the day, as did Bryce (Petty), as did Ryan (Fitzpatrick).

On what he tells Smith about getting stripped in the pocket…

Always protect the ball, but the quarterbacks have on red shirts and you’re not allowed to hit them, so they take a little extra liberty. I’m sure when the game is flying and you have to hit those guys, they’ll go down or either they’ll slide or some of those types of things. He just has to learn to protect the ball.

On whether anyone stood out during practice…

There were some good plays on defense and some good plays on offense. Obviously, Bilal Powell’s run was good. Brandon (Marshall) made a great catch and some defensive guys stopped the run and filled in well. But I have to look at the overall film and see how they played overall rather than on two plays.

On how the chemistry between Smith and Marshall has developed throughout camp…

It’s still developing. He’s not the only guy. Eric (Decker) made some great catches over there as well, so the chemistry is still developing. It’s not polished yet. He has to develop chemistry with all those guys, but he connected with him a couple times tonight so it was good to see.

On whether he thinks Brandon Marshall pushed off on the 35-yard touchdown…

I couldn’t see it all the way down the field as a head coach. If I was on the defensive side of the ball, I would probably say yes. If I was on the offensive side of the ball, I’d say no. That’s one of the perils of being a head coach. You don’t have an opinion on it.

On how Trevor Reilly has been playing lately…

He has a big motor. Trevor comes off the ball, he plays hard, he only has one speed and understanding what he’s doing, the way he comes of the edge is the way I’d like to see all the back-ups come off the edge.

On whether there were any injuries…

He (Zac Stacy) limped off. I don’t have an injury report on him. (Bilal) Powell has a groin or hamstring and (Steve) Maneri and there’s one more receiver, (T.J.) Graham has a hamstring. I don’t know how serious yet, but I know he didn’t finish. Walter Powell, T.J. Graham and Maneri the tight end.

On whether he expects Mo (Wilkerson) to not play in the first preseason game…

Not sure yet. They say he’s getting better by the day. I’ll see Monday and Tuesday if he practices. We’ll see how things progress with him running and we’ll go from there.

On (Chris) Owusu…

He’s got a concussion. We’ve got to run some tests, so he’s in the program. We’re going to go from there. We have to run some tests.

On how he determines what a sack is in a practice setting…

You see the sacks, but sometimes you want to see where the play and the drive develop where you don’t get anything out of it. So you have to be careful what you do so you don’t pick sides on it. If it’s blatantly and it’s clear, you give him the sack. If it’s touch and go and bang bang you give the offense the benefit of the doubt, but it swings by the day. If it’s holding, it’s a blatant sack I’ll call it, if it’s not I may let it go.

On Willie Colon receiving all the first-team reps at right guard…

He got most of them today. We were down a couple of linemen, so we just kept everybody as is for tonight. Willie has been taking limited reps, so I wanted to see him play some extended time.
