Bryce Petty was drafted by the New York Jets in the 2015 NFL Draft with the 103rd pick. Leading up to the draft, Petty seemed like the third best quarterback behind Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston. Many would argue that Petty could potentially be a very good quarterback in the league if he is given time to develop.

Petty posted great numbers in his junior and senior years at Baylor. He had a 62 percent completion percentage, throwing for 4,200 yards and 32 touchdowns in 2013. He had a very similar senior year posting a 63.1 completion percentage, throwing for 3,855 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Training camp is approaching and with each passing day fans are wondering who will be the starting quarterback come Week 1. Many were speculating after Petty was drafted that the new regime would be throwing him into the mix against Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

One of the main worries about Petty is the system he came from at Baylor. Many would argue that the offensive system he came from protected Petty from making mistakes unlike modern NFL offensive systems. Due to this thought it’s believed that Petty will need a good season or two to get acclimated into a new NFL system. Although it is said that the offense at Baylor hid his flaws, many believe if given the time to develop, Petty can become a very productive quarterback in the NFL.

Even ESPN’s Jon Gruden sees the potential Petty has to become a solid quarterback within the league. In an article written by Sara Bribel of Zap2It.com, Gruden stated that Petty “might have the best arm talent in the draft” which is a very interesting observation. Here is what Gruden had to say:

"“Petty might have the best arm talent in this draft. Last year came to town and put on an aerial display. I would be surprised if Petty isn’t that guy this year. Stereotyped in the Baylor offense, but he’s different. He’s a great passer. He’s a finisher. I love finishers. Gray shirt, red shirt, waited his time. He’s physically and mentally ready to go. I like Petty.”-Jon Gruden Derek Carr"

With training camp coming up for the Jets, fans will certainly be watching how Petty develops throughout camp. Going into the draft, Petty’s main weaknesses were that he would hold onto the ball for too long, did not take a snap under center in his whole career and his ball placement tends to be off on some passes. These weaknesses will come to play in this season’s training camp.

The positive thing for Petty is that he will get a season to truly develop into an NFL quarterback. One thing that can be sure for this upcoming season, Petty despite being told by coaches that they will be developing him over the next season or two, will be heavily looked at by fans and media. Especially if Petty shows his weaknesses during camp.

Petty can possibly become the dark horse of the off season if he is able to show coaches that he understands the offense and is able to not give the ball away. Only time will tell if Petty can show that he is the next franchise quarterback of the Jets. One things for sure, this training camp is going to be very fun to watch.
