Jarvis Harrison was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. The big offensive guard stands 6’4″ and tips the scales at 330 pounds. Harrison is a big man undoubtedly, and makes for a very interesting project. Let’s take a look at him as he prepares for training camp.

Harrison played his collegiate career at Texas A&M where he played both left tackle and left guard. Guard is his more natural position, but it will be up to Chan Gailey and new offensive line coach Steve Marshall to determine where he fits on this roster. Some experts had Harrison going as early as the third round as his stock fell due to a fall off in his senior season.

Harrison played basketball in high school and competed on the school’s track and field team as well. He began to play high school football in his junior year and managed to leave school a two star prospect. Recruited by several colleges including Baylor, Harrison committed to Texas A&M.

While playing in college he showed development throughout his career with the Aggies. His versatility to play guard and tackle led to him being used as a “band aid” in his final year at Texas A&M. Harrison played primarily at guard for Johnny Manziel‘s Heisman Trophy season. Playing in the SEC at left guard is not an easy task by any measure, and that experience gained Harrison an invite to the NFLPA 2015 Collegiate Bowl.

Invited to this year’s NFL Combine, Harrison had a chance to show off his athleticism. He proves he moves pretty well for a big guy, turning in a 5.19 in the 40-yard event, a time of 4.63 in the shuttle and a 7.51 in the 3-cone drill. Harrison put up 26 reps of 225 pounds at the combine as well. Finishing out his stats for the day, he added a vertical jump of 29 1/2″ and an 8’6″ broad jump.

Going into training camp, the Jets could surely use someone to step up at guard. Harrison shows quick feet and is fluid through his hips for a man his size. He plays well in pass protection, but often doesn’t finish the block in the run game. Many scouting reports knocked Harrison for a lack of effort, some even questioned his dedication to football. Most of that criticism came from Harrison showing up overweight and out of shape for his senior season, resulting in him missing the first four games of the season for the Aggies.

Harrison has the size and athleticism to play left guard at the NFL level for the Jets. If Gailey and Marshall can motivate this young man and Harrison can continue to show development, the Jets might have hit a home run with this pick.

He comes from a SEC spread offense, which should aid Harrison adjusting to the pros. I think he’s another young guy to keep a close eye on this summer, he could make a push to claim the back up position at guard.

Harrison has a big upside, general manager Mike Maccagnan and his scouting team might have found a diamond in the rough here. It would be great news for Jets fans if they have. Either way, the Jets should be looking better at guard in the near future if Harrison shows the type of development many are expecting. I wish him luck this summer.
