Poll: Should New York Jets extend Muhammad Wilkerson?

facebooktwitterreddit

After holding out of organized team activities for the New York Jets this offseason, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is back with the team during their mandatory minicamps. Wilkerson held out of OTAs in hopes of getting a newly extended contract that would pay him close to the top defensive linemen in the NFL but the Jets chose not to go that route. Considering that he’ll be playing out the final year of his original rookie contract, it seems the Jets are in no rush at the current moment and would rather wait to revisit negotiations at the end of this upcoming season.

Depending on how one looks at this entire situation, many believe that considering Wilkerson has consistently been one of the top defensive performers for the Jets the past few years, the team should definitely take care of him and gotten a deal done already.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Jets have shelled out a ton of money this offseason to bolster many weaknesses across the team. They spent top dollar bolstering their defensive secondary, wide receiving corps, quarterback and running back. They also drafted Wilkerson’s possible future replacement in Leonard Williams at the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Jets most likely want to keep Wilkerson on a team-friendly contract but now it’s apparent it won’t happen until next year’s offseason. The grim reality is if he’s seeking something like Ndamukong Suh got with the Miami Dolphins ($114 million, six years) it won’t realistically happen with the Jets.

There is still some time for a new contract extension to happen before the start of the regular season but with his holdout during OTAs, it’s looking more and more likely that the Jets will probably revisit what to do with Wilkerson come 2016.

Overall, what do you think Jets Nation? Should the Jets extend Wilkerson already or wait to deal with what to do with him come next offseason? Vote below and please leave your comments to get the conversation going!
