New York Jets: Team makes right call in Geno Smith
Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey made it official in that Geno Smith is the undisputed starter at quarterback for the New York Jets. While many have been shocked that Smith was given the starting spot so soon this offseason, it’s actually a brilliant move by the organization.
For years now, controversy at quarterback has been the norm for the Jets as this silences everyone once and for all to focus on the task at hand. The Jets are in a rebuilding phase and will need to have all hands on deck working hard to produce much better results this upcoming season than in the past.

Whether you agree or disagree with this decision, Smith is hands down the best option to start for the Jets compared to his peers. Ryan Fitzpatrick is dealing with a broken leg and while he’ll be a nice veteran mentor to have for Smith, is a backup at best that won’t be even ready to do football activities until late this summer.
Bryce Petty was drafted as a future option at quarterback as he is nowhere near ready to start for the Jets this upcoming season. He has a solid skill-set and could be their next franchise quarterback but make no mistake about it, he won’t be starting anytime soon due still being raw and not fully developed to handle the position.
While Petty has more upside than Matt Simms and Jake Heaps, he’ll probably end up making the roster as a third-string option at quarterback for the Jets. Simms and Heaps will be battling it for a spot on the practice squad with one making it and the other looking to find another home.
Smith finally has a much better supporting cast, a new offensive spread system that better suits his style of play and above all else, 100% confidence from those that run the team that he’s the right guy for the job. Regardless of what many think, this is a very smart thing to do so everyone can be behind Smith and let him finally develop with the support needed to thrive.
Overall, Smith has everything he needs to succeed as now it’s time for him to grow with this team and all the new offseason acquisitions around him. The past is in the books as a new era is about to be unleashed as the Jets will do their very best to bounce back come next season. Who knows, perhaps Smith can finally live up to his true potential now that everyone that wears green and white is supporting him completely.
