New York Jets: Breaking down rookie training camp

facebooktwitterreddit

This past weekend, the New York Jets held their rookie training camp to get a closer look at their 2015 NFL Draft class as well as bring in some undrafted free agents into the mix. Here are some news and notes from this event as for the most part, it went pretty well and as expected for a rookie training camp weekend.

Defensive end

Leonard Williams

lived up to the hype as he was extremely fast and showed off his pass-rushing skills. Since he also ran a 3-4 defense at USC, he should have a very easy transition with the Jets’ defense

  • Wide receiver Devin Smith also showed his speed and ability to haul in deep passes. His skill-set will finally give the Jets a much needed weapon into their wide receiver corps as all eyes are on him to deliver a monster season similar to what Odell Beckham Jr. did with the New York Giants last year
  • The Jets signed another quarterback over that weekend in Jake Heaps. He’s going to battle to see if he can end up making the roster but it’s doubtful since Bryce Petty looked very impressive in drills and with his passing and could become their third-string quarterback
  • Linebacker Taiwan Jones could emerge as one of the sleeper signings of the Jets as he’s been getting a ton of praise for his fine defensive techniques and tackling. It’ll be great to see what he brings to the table once the real training camps with pads and equipment begin this summer
  • The Jets might not make any drastic changes to their offensive playbook next season but are expected to have a balanced attack against opponents. Last season, the Jets ranked 3rd in the NFL with rushing yards per game at 145 but will now launch a more balanced attack to utilize their new offensive weapons and offensive mind of Chan Gailey

Overall, the Jets are building something special as they hope they find some quality gems in the rough. Below is a complete list of all their undrafted rookies to date which was reported by Rich Cimini of ESPN:
