Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has indeed been a part of many teams so far in his pro football career. Last season with the Houston Texans, Fitzpatrick contributed 2,483 yards on 312 attempts for 17 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Granted, he wasn’t one of the top quarterbacks playing last season but he was one of the smartest that carefully picked his throws and played conservative yet successful football. Since the New York Jets landed him this offseason, could he be the savior they’ve been looking for to finally bring stability at quarterback?
It’s no secret that the Jets’ quarterback situation is one big question mark headed into next season. Head coach Todd Bowles has stated that quarterback Geno Smith will indeed be heading into training camps as a starter which solidifies that it’s his spot to lose. The Jets brought in Fitzpatrick as veteran insurance but it’s hard to believe that he can’t dethrone Smith as a clear-cut better option to start.

With Matt Simms and newly drafted quarterback Bryce Petty all in the mix, it really will come down to how well Smith did this offseason to mentally and physically prepare for his third season with the Jets. He was a turnover machine last season and was even demoted so he surely has to come back improved while understanding his time is on a short leash if he messes up.
If Smith ends up proving to everyone that he is indeed the best option to start, so be it. However, if he falters like he did last season and things are bleak for the Jets that will look to rebound this upcoming season, a quarterback switch to Fitzpatrick might just save the season since he plays very well in a systematic way.
With new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey reunited with Fitzpatrick, there is no reason to believe that if he gets the opportunity, he will surprise many with how efficient he can be. Make no mistake about it, compared to Smith at the moment, Fitzpatrick is easily a better option to lead the way for the Jets in the future.
Hopefully Smith is ready to prove his doubters wrong, but if the past has anything to say about it, he won’t be a starting option for much longer. Especially once Fitzpatrick is fully healed from his broken leg injury last year, he could be quite the force to reckon with when given the opportunity.
