New York Jets: Predicting starting running back for 2015

If it’s one thing the New York Jets always get right, it’s how they run the football. Last season, the Jets fielded the No. 3 best rushing attack in the NFL that saw it average 142.5 yards per game as they were able to dominate the ground game. Unfortunately, due to their inconsistency at quarterback and various defensive issues, they ended their efforts with a 4-12 record. Even though they stunk it up when it came to wins and losses, the ground game continued to take off thanks to running back Chris Ivory leading the charge.

Last season, Ivory contributed 821 rushing yards on 198 carries and six touchdowns. He was the leading rusher on the Jets ahead of Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell. With Ivory’s speed, ability to break tackles and also contributing as a receiving option, there is no doubt that he will be a force to reckon with come next season.

Since Johnson is no longer a member of the Jets, the team wisely picked up two more experienced running backs for depth reasons. They picked up Stevan Ridley via free agency to help add another power rusher into the mix. Ridley has a history of being injury prone but when healthy, could really power his way to keeping those chains moving.

After the St. Louis Rams drafted Todd Gurley in the 1st Round of the 2015 NFL Draft, running back Zac Stacy requested a trade. Luckily for the Jets, they were able to land his services via a trade with the Chargers in exchange for a 7th Round pick.

In his career so far, Stacy has rushed for 1,266 yards on 326 careers and eight touchdowns. Stacy could very well be a diamond in the rough as he has the capabilities of being a top-notch running back for the Jets. Ivory and Stacy could form into quite the dynamic duo that could wreak havoc against opponents come next season and beyond.

Powell has consistently been a quality backup for the Jets who adds a nice dimension to the team with his ability to convert 3rd and short situations. It’s always good to have quality depth at running back as Powell has proven he has what it takes to get the job done when his number is called.

Overall, Ivory continues to be the best candidate to be the Jets’ starting running back but also should share playing time with Stacy. Watch out for the Jets upcoming rushing attack come next season since there is no doubt that they will continue to be one of the premiere NFL teams to win plenty of games thanks to what they do on the ground.
