The NFL draft rolls along, Jets fans. This time, Mike Maccagnan addressed the offensive line, selecting Jarvis Harrison from Texas A & M with their fifth round choice.
Harrison has experience at both guard and tackle, making his versatility something the Jets would be interested in. He has predominantly been a left guard, starting 33 games there, although he played left tackle well in his four starts at the position. Here are some of his strengths and weaknesses from Dane Brugler and his draft guide:
STRENGTHS: Thickly built with wide hips and strong bubbleā¦carries his weight well with an athletic lower body and agile footwork to mirror in small spacesā¦bursts off the snap with the initial set-up quickness to get into positionā¦absorbs contact well with active limbs, marrying his punch with his eyesā¦uses hand placement tolatch-and-control, driving defenders away from the ball with core powerā¦will sink his weight in his stance to anchor with leverageā¦consistent hustle and doesnāt take plays off ā finds ways to get the job done, even if it doesnāt look pretty in the processā¦versatile experience and his on-field effectiveness didnāt drop off when asked to kick out to left tackle ā 37 career starts, 33 at left guard and four at left tackle.
WEAKNESSES: Has some sloppy weight on his frame and needs to improve his conditioningā¦has some hip tightness to quickly redirectā¦needs to consistently roll his hips on contact and not just rely on his upper body to get the job doneā¦late to recover after he overextends or falls off blocks ā waist-bending habitsā¦will give upground off the snap due to short sets and needs to improve his pre-snap recognitionā¦not comfortable in space at the second levelā¦streaky confidence and gets down on himself after mistakesā¦satisfied with his initial block and doesnāt display the nasty playing temperament to be a mauling finisherā¦soft spoken and still has growingup to doā¦unreliable habits and work ethic with questionable football passion ā was late to his own pro day workoutā¦lost his starting job to begin the 2014 season due to poor conditioning following rehab from injuryā¦durability concerns after a calf issue (Jan. 2014) multiple shoulder surgeries.
Good pick, as we know that the offensive line has not distinguished itself lately. Harrison will compete with the likes of Dakota Dozier, Brian Winters, and Willie Colon.
