2015 NFL Draft: Shane Ray to the New York Jets in Fansided Mock

Time to look at another mock draft. Tonight we are looking at this week’s Fansided.com. This is written by staff writer Josh Criswell with the site’s latest version of the NFL draft first round. For the Jets, he has selected Shane Ray, DE, Missouri. Here are Criswell’s thoughts:

The New York Jets are in absolute need of a quarterback in this year’s draft, so if Mariota is still on the board at the No. 6 spot, there is a decent chance the Jets would select the Heisman-winning quarterback from Oregon. They might even consider trading up to draft him, if they are confident enough that Mariota will not be another bust like current quarterback Geno Smith has been so far.

There is also a good chance, however, that the Jets could elect to go with an elite pass rusher like Missouri’s Shane Ray. While quarterback may be the most important position on the field, great pass rushers are right up there with them, and the Jets need an athletic pass rusher just as much as they need a new quarterback.

Ray fits this role perfectly. The biggest weakness to his game is probably the fact that he relies too much on his athleticism. In the Jets case, that might not be a problem. Their defense relies on overpowering opponents with premier athleticism and constant pressure on the edge, an area that Ray thrives in.

Vic Beasley, an outside linebacker from Clemson, is a player I could see the Jets going for at this spot as well. Beasley is another athletic pass rusher that wowed scouts at the combine.

The Jets cannot go wrong with either of these two, but I think they go with Ray, the 2014 SEC defensive player of the year and a first team All-American.

No problem with the Jets taking Shane Ray. I agree that the Jets need a dominant edge pass rusher, and Shane Ray fits the bill. He is also close to Sheldon Richardson, which will help Ray acclimate to life in the NFL and with the Jets. Ray would be a fine pick. Personally, I prefer Beasley, in my opinion he is a better player. But drafting Shane Ray would be an excellent choice in the first round of the upcoming draft.
