The free agency period is less than two weeks away. It comes with great anticipation, as the Jets have the second most available cap space, with over $50 million in room the last time I read. The Jets have a lot of holes to fill, yet Mike Maccagnan has stated publicly that the Jets will be big players in the free agent market.

Where do they go? What about free safety? The Jets need more than just cornerbacks in the defensive backfield. They also need a guy to play that deep safety position, freeing up Calvin Pryor to play closer to the line and defend against the run.

Devin McCourty leads the list of free agent safeties, but he is not likely to hit the market. Here is a guy that the Jets should give a look.

Enter Rahim Moore. We profile Moore, with help from our friends at Pro Football Focus and Over the Cap.

Let’s look at Moore’s career stats to date:

Defense & Fumbles

Rahim Moore has shown to be an all-around player.  Moore had a career year in 2014, posting four interceptions.  At 24 years old, he is just heading towards his prime, so the sky is the limit.  Before an injury ended his 2013 campaign, Moore posted two interceptions in just ten starts.  That projects out to another four interception season, so clearly Rahim Moore can get after the football.

More from Jets News

The Jets need a ball-hawk at free safety.  Calvin Pryor is more of an in the box, run defender.  A guy like Moore could help Pryor get back to his natural playing position.

Let’s look at some grades for Mr. Moore, courtesy of the aforementioned Pro Football Focus.

Overall he posted a grade of 2.4, and his grade in pass coverage was 4.2. Although his run grade was a negative last year at -3.3, Moore posted a run grade in 2012 of 3.9, showing his ability against the run.  Coincidentally, 2012 was his best year with tackling, posting 72 tackles, 60 solo.

Another interesting stat is “Yards per Coverage Snap”, which illustrates how many yards he allows when his man is credited as the primary target per snaps that Moore is in coverage. Moore was near the top of the league at .25 yards. Meaning? When his man makes the catch, he doesn’t go very far. A credit to Rahim Moore there.

Let’s look at the financials.

Rahim Moore is coming off of a contract where he earned an average of just over $1.1 million per season. $1.7 million was fully guaranteed, so Moore has not been a big expense. With four interceptions, and one in the playoffs, Moore will likely be a highly requested free agent. It will take a raise to get him here.

But with the need at the position, and the pile of money the Jets have to play with, Rahim Moore is certainly a player the Jets should take a look at.
