Rex Ryan Believes the Jets Problem is Execution not Fight

Following Monday night’s game against the Bills, Rex Ryan sounded like a beaten man. He was disappointed, upset, and in some cases, didn’t have any answers. It almost seemed that the soul of Rex Ryan had been swept away, resigned to the fact that after five game, he will no longer be the Jets coach.

After watching the game back on film, coach Ryan had something else to say. As usual, he talked about the fact that he will fight to the bitter end, and that his team hasn’t stopped doing so. Ryan actually feels that execution was the problem against the Bills, not that they quit. Ryan talked about that with the media during his weekly press conference the day after the game:

I’ve really kind of addressed it. And look, I get the quitting thing when people look at it. For instance, we give up a 30-yard touchdown run. That doesn’t happen to us. On that particular play, I put a run blitz in and we got a guy (that) takes the wrong angle. Then we kind of get tied up, we make a poor tackle. And so I get where something like that can happen, but I assure you that’s not the case. Our guys are playing hard. Look, this is the worst record I’ve had, obviously. So, if you draw on that fact, then it’s been a struggle to say the least. I’m doing everything I think I can, but it just hasn’t had the results yet. Obviously, those results aren’t to my standards or the Jets standards, anybody’s standards. But again, that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop fighting and stop competing because I’m going to.

To his credit, Rex Ryan will not go down without a fight. Ryan says that he will be at his best, and there is no reason not to believe him. It does seem like his team quit, however. There were definitely issues with execution the other night against Buffalo, but there were issues with effort as well. The play that Ryan referenced in the quote did not just look like an issue of a bad angle. The effort didn’t seem to be there.

Hopefully the Jets can reflect the fight that coach Ryan has in him over the last five games.
