New Billboard Calls for Woody Johnson to Fire John Idzik or Sell the New York Jets

The fans that have associated with the “Fire John Idzik” website are back in the news this week. In case you missed it, they have purchased a new billboard near Route 3 and MetLife Stadium, calling for owner Woody Johnson to either fire John Idzik, or sell his ownership in the New York Jets. Clearly, New York Jets fans are angry, and they don’t want to take the current situation any longer. They want change.

Now, I am not here this afternoon to say that Jets fans are wrong for doing this. Jets fans have every right to be upset, and if they want to spend their money in this manner, it is not my job to say no. My point is a simple one, it’s not worth it to spend your money this way. It will not, and it should not, affect the way Woody Johnson does his business.

There have been many occasions to question the job Woody Johnson has done as owner. I, myself, have done so many times on this very website. There are things he has done, and said, that make you wonder why Mr. Johnson is a football team owner. However, does anyone really believe that he will succumb to fan pressure and sell the Jets? If anything, we know that Woody Johnson is going to do his own thing, no matter what others tell him. The New York Jets make him a lot of money, Woody Johnson is not going to sell the team because the fans have requested that he do so.

And let’s call it correctly. The Jets have had quite a few playoff appearances while Woody Johnson has been the owner of the team. No, we obviously haven’t made it to the big one, but the Jets have spent most of Woody Johnson’s tenure as a relevant, competitive football team.

It’s a similar situation with John Idzik. We all know that he has made many questionable, to say the least, decisions. I think we all feel that we could do a better job than John Idzik has done so far. He has left many, many holes on this roster, leaving it tough for Rex Ryan to function. Woody Johnson is not stupid, and has to see what is going on, and he may very well fire John Idzik in response.

But not only will he not bow to fan pressure to fire him, he SHOULDN’T bow to fan pressure to fire him. Woody Johnson has to run the New York Jets based on the merits that he sees, and the people around him see. Period. When Mr. Johnson starts running the Jets based on fan pressure, we are all in trouble. He will run his business the way he sees fit.

New York Jets fans have the right to be upset. Go right ahead and authorize a billboard if it gets your frustration out. We all certainly have a right to be frustrated. But it won’t help. Woody Johnson is not going to do things because we tell him to. Nor should he.
