Tuesday Morning Quarterback: New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills

Now that was ugly. For anyone that was looking forward to last night’s game between the Jets and the Bills, that positive feeling left quickly. The Jets came off of a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and fifteen days of rest, with a chance to turn the corner and turn things around in the second half of the season. Instead, we unfortunately saw what we saw last night. The Jets had their rear ends handed to them, falling to the Bills by the score of 38-3, in a game that it didn’t even appear that they showed up to play.

It was as bad as it has ever looked under head coach Rex Ryan.

This was one of the few times under Rex Ryan that the Jets did not appear prepared to play. After 15 days off, and being able to practice twice as much as their opponent, you would think that the Jets would have come out on all cylinders, attacking the Bills on both sides of the football. Well, it didn’t work out that way. The Jets had a very ugly three and out to start the game, and the Bills marched it down the field easily to take a 7-0 lead, and off we went.

I have never watched a game where the quarterback, as bad as they may have played, looked like a zombie. I hadn’t, until now. Michael Vick played the game last night as if his soul wasn’t there. Not only did he play badly, he played as if he wasn’t even there. He did absolutely nothing to put the Jets in a position to win anything, or even have a chance.

The offensive line didn’t help, as Michael was sacked seven times, and running for his life the entire game. When Geno Smith entered the game, it was as much for Michael Vick’s safety as it was for anything else. The Jets signal caller injured himself making the tackle on an interception, but was ineffective, and Rex said after the game that we wanted to give Geno a chance anyway. The Jets offense returned to familiar form, playing with no spirit.

The play calling did not help the Jets offense. Michael Vick was not accurate. His passes were off the mark, and that was the only thing consistent about his game. They were so off that maybe three more passes should have been intercepted. But, did Marty change his play calling? Did he call some bubble screens to get Harvin going? Did they pound the football with the running game, to open up passing lanes? No, and no. Marty Mornhinweg just plowed ahead with his plan, not adapting to what was going on. For much of this season, he has not been the offensive coordinator that the Jets, and their fans, were expecting.

And by the way, they had a sequence that started with a delay of game, followed by the need for a timeout, and ended with a sack. Rex Ryan couldn’t even talk about it after the game. Need I say more?

The Jets secondary didn’t play unreasonably bad. There were no blown assignments, as there were the last time these two teams met. But, Kyle Orton still played as efficiently as he has ever played. A big reason for that was that the Jets “vaunted” front seven couldn’t lay a finger on him. They sacked him a mere one time. Once. So much for the “Sons of Anarchy”, huh?

If a defense gives up 38 points, there really isn’t much more to say. Well, other than one word, “pathetic”.

And, to top it off, the Jets allow a blocked punt to a team that hadn’t registered one in TEN YEARS! Ten years. Between that, and Ryan Quigley unable to punt it down the field consistently, the Jets had issue there. And what about Percy Harvin? Can he stop running back kickoffs that were so deep he would have been in the tunnel if they were any deeper? If it’s seven or eight yards team, please take a knee. Are we asking too much?

I remember when special teams was actually an x-factor for the Jets. Maybe Mike Westhoff got a good laugh or two watching that performance.

They couldn’t block, or consistently run. They couldn’t throw or catch passes. The Jets couldn’t stop the run too well, nor could they stop the pass. The special teams unit was awful.

Other than that, last night was a great night for the New York Jets.
