Well Jets fans, it hass been a “brutal” year. It didn’t get any better this past Sunday, another week, another loss. This one concerns me though, as it seemed to me that the defense “quit” after falling behind early. They didn’t bring much of a rush, the blitzes were noticeably missing ,and they were a bit porous against the run at times. This wasn’t a Rex Ryan defense. The Chiefs converted on third down (8-13) and moved the ball at will. The Jets defense played flat with little fire.
Did anyone else catch that Rex benched a majority of his secondary at points in this game? Well, at one point Calvin Pryor, Antonio Allen, and Kyle Wilson were on the sideline at the same time. The Jets secondary truly was a “no name defense” at that point. Rex got the new kids some reps as a unit, it really wasn’t a benching, but I thought it was an interesting move by Rex. He’s still coaching, and that’s admirable!
Percy Harvin was exciting to watch on Sunday. As everyone knows. Harvin has always had plenty of talent, and it was fun to watch Michael Vick hook up with Harvin on a couple of occasions. Harvin looked pretty good on the outside, proving some of his doubters wrong, if he can continue to put up numbers like that and stay out of trouble, the Jets might have no problem giving up next year’s fourth rounder. We’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out I think.
Michael Vick was fun to watch on Sunday. He didn’t play a great game, and he couldn’t finish some drives, but for me anyway, it made this loss almost bearable. I’ve never been a Michael Vick fan, and I wasn’t very happy when the Jets signed him, but I must admit I enjoyed seeing him on the football field again. I never really considered Vick a great QB, but it’s hard to deny that there is something “electric” about watching him play. Seeing him getting banged up at the end of the game was sort of sad. I personally think the Jets should do the right thing by Vick, and let him sit. It’s probably over for Vick, and I’d hate to see him get seriously hurt. The season is toast, in the dumpster, so why put him out there at his age to take the hits?
I’m not on board with their handling of Geno Smith and the quarterback position to this point. I get the argument that Michael Vick gives you the “best chance to win”. it’s absolutely correct. But what is the point? Wins would be awesome, but I think Smith needs to be out there taking his lumps and getting reps. Unless the Jet Management has totally given up on Smith and intends to trade/cut him after the season, I see no point in playing Vick. Its done, it’s over, let the kid play it out and see if he can turn it around.

Vick is gone at season’s end, presumably into retirement, and I can’t fathom them resigning him. If the Jets still see any possibility that Smith is still on the roster next year, then they should give him every opportunity to work with and build some chemistry with these receivers. If they start Vick for the rest of the season (if he can make it), does it mean Smith is done in New York? It would appear a bit early to make that decision, but it is possible the Jets have seen enough and are ready to move on.
I’m utterly disappointed in this season. It’s hard to believe it was only ten months ago, I was exited for the draft and a promising free agency signing period. When it was all said and done, and the final roster shaped up this year, I was concerned, but I didn’t imagine it turning out into such a disaster. There are games left, and I’ll continue to watch games and root this team on, but it’s getting harder each year. Jets fans deserve a competitive football team, I only hope someone in this organization can fix this mess and give it to them!
