New York Jets Fans Catch A Breather
By Paul Newbold
The Jets played on Thursday night in a heartbreaking loss to the New England Patriots. I don’t know about you guys, but in years like this I look for the Jets to win against the Pats and the Dolphins. The record is poor, the team is struggling, and they are likely going nowhere, but somehow if they pull out wins against these two teams, for me, the season won’t be a total waste. I know it may sound strange, but I consider them consolation prizes! This loss was a hard one to swallow, especially since they showed up and played hard.
With the Thursday night loss the Jets are now 1-6, heading into a much easier schedule. Thursday night games make the team play on short rest, but luckily the schedule gives the Jets a big rest, not having to play again to Sunday. Time for the players to get some rest while still preparing for the next game. It’s a prolonged period where often players get to heal from the aches and pains, often coming back healthier. Eric Decker is a guy I think the extra time will help, he’s had a nagging hamstring, and this week could be key heading into the second half of the season. The offensive line might benefit as well, the Jets have some banged up lineman and hopefully they too can heal a bit. This in between game time , ten days, is exactly what this team needs. They get to catch a breather, and this year I think it came at a perfect time.
Fans also get a break! We’ve been debating the pros and cons of this team since the start of the season. We’ve sat in front of our TV’s or in our stadium seats and yelled, cursed, and generally vented our frustrations. We’ve hit the newspapers pouring over the multiple of articles written each day, hoping to find the answers to our struggling franchise. We’ve donned our Green and White week after week, hoping against hope that this would be the week our team broke out and brought us home a win! It’s exhausting being a Jets fan, especially in years like this, and I for one welcome the rest! I taped two games on Sunday, did some yard work around the old house, and took a nap! I’m an aging Jetd fan, so naps have become a luxury when the Jets don’t play on Sunday!! This break in the action allows the fans to calm down a bit, reevaluate the season to this point and relax some, as we, like the team get to take a breather!
It’s a well deserved rest for fans. The fan base has been infighting for weeks now. The comment sections of many sites have grown down right brutal. with fans turning on each other, the name calling and personal attacks were growing with fervor! Of course here at the Jet Press, we are saved from most of the brutal critics and defenders. Here, we get to express our opinions and discuss them without much of the intensity and insanity many sites out there offer. That’s why I write here, the staff has gone a long way into creating that kind of atmosphere, and our readers are the best at keeping that discussion going! Hats of to our readers! This week they along with most of our staff, get to take a bit of a breather!

Of course it hasn’t all been quiet around Jet Nation this week. John Idzik went out and made a trade to acquire Percy Harvin from the Seattle Seahawks! I commend Idzik for making a move (I think it might be a great one), but I also have to sit back and wonder why not sooner. Percy Harvin brings with him the potential to be a deep threat for this franchise, one we desperately lacked all season. He’s fast, athletic and possesses a great set of hands. I would have liked to seen Idzik find a cornerback, but at least he made a move! Now the question becomes what does it cost us. Idzik took over his contract and its a big one, the 7.1million dollars is just the tip of the iceberg if Idzik intends to keep him.

The Jets traded a conditional 6th rounder for Percy, with the potential of it becoming a 4th rounder should he make the roster next year. So, is this simply a stop-gap signing? Did they sign him to exclusively evaluate Smith this season and intend to release him before next season? This contract is awfully large for a John Idzik signing, while there is no guaranteed money after this season, the cost of keeping him after the season grows. I’m looking forward to seeing what Percy can do for this team, I look back and wonder what an acquisition like this could have done for this team if it had come before the season. Time will tell, but for the moment I’m glad Percy Harvin is a Jet.
So, while we’re taking a break, relaxing and generally enjoying the calm of this long week, I’d like to give my reader’s the chance to discuss the team, the acquisition, and what lies ahead in the second half of the season. Let me know what you are thinking. All topics are fair game. As always, thanks for reading, I’m looking forward to hearing what you think!
