Let’s get right to the report card grades from last night’s Jets loss to the New England Patriots.

QUARTERBACK: B- Geno Smith looked good last night, but the numbers don’t even tell the full story. On the night, Geno threw it for 226 yards and one touchdown. He made good decisions, and didn’t turn the ball over. Geno gave the Jets a chance to win. It comes down outside of an A, because of the problems in the red zone. 4 plays, no touchdowns early.

With that, I cannot grade the qurterback.

Chris Ivory

RUNNING BACKS: A- The running backs really had a breakout game yesterday, rushing the ball for 218 yards, over five yards per carry. Chris Ivory topped all runners with 107 yards on 21, and Chris Johnson added 61 yards on 13 carries.

The running game hadn’t looked better in a long time.

WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS: C+ Eric Decker looked healthy, and moved around well in posting four catches for 65 yards. Jeff Cumberland came out of nowhere for three caches, 50 yards and a touchdown, and Jeremy Kerley made some good plays.

However,Jace Amaro had too many drops, and guys can’t get open. Earth to the Jets, you need good receivers THROUGHOUT the roster and depth chart. Other than Kerley and Decker, the guys can’t get open consistently, and make a big play when they need it most.

OFFENSIVE LINE: B The line was good in the running attack. There were some huge holes in the running game, as the Jets ran for 218 yards and 5.1 yards per carry. They dominated at the point of attack. Sadly, however the Jets had a tougher time with the pass rush, allowing three sacks, and causing Smith to scramble for his life makes things very difficult.

Oct 12, 2014; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Jets defensive end

Muhammad Wilkerson

DEFENSIVE LINE: C It was a very average night for the boys up front. For the limited amount of time the Patriots spent running the football, they ran for over four yards per carry. They were only able to sack Tom Brady twice. We didn’t hear their names all night. So, there you go.

Oct 16, 2014; Foxborough, MA, USA; New England Patriots running back

Shane Vereen

David Harris

LINEBACKERS: C These guys also had a quiet game for the Jets. David Harris did post a sack, but that was the extent of what we heard. They were caught in too many mismatches against the Patriots weapons. They were no match for their opponents for most of the game. They didn’t play a terrible game, but didn’t play a game that was stood out either, henceforth the “C”.

Oct 16, 2014; Foxborough, MA, USA; New England Patriots wide receiver

Danny Amendola

(80) catches the ball for a touchdown against New York Jets cornerback

Antonio Allen

DEFENSIVE BACKS: D These guys were completely overmatched. It’s not all their fault, as they don’t have a great deal of talent back there. Again, not for today’s discussion. Antonio Allen got beaten badly be the early touchdown to Vereen. Brady did not often have to fit the ball into tight coverage. The Jets didn’t have much in terms of tight coverage.

Not all their own fault, but that is the way it is.

Oct 16, 2014; Foxborough, MA, USA; New York Jets kicker

Nick Folk

SPECIAL TEAMS: B- Walter Powell broke through with an excellent kickoff return, setting the Jets up with good field position. Nick Folk was money for the majority of the football game, as he has been for most of his time here in New York. The grade comes down because of that terrible punt by Ryan Quigley, setting up the drive that led to the Amendola touchdown.

Also, it comes down for the blocked kick. Not because of Nick Folk, but the rest of them for not getting the blocks made.
