Inside the Mornhinweg Playbook: Geno to Jeremy Kerley for TD: Week 14

Now that I am back, we return to our Sunday morning series, “Inside the Mornhinweg Playbook”. To refresh your memories, each week, we are taking a look at a play from each game, on the offensive side of the ball, and breaking it down. How did it work? Basically, showing the inner workings of the offensive play and how these plays will thrive in the future.

The most recent edition was approximately, when we covered a Chris Ivory run in week 13.

So with that said, let’s get right back to it, off and running with a look at week 14.

This is a play from late in the first quarter in the week 14 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Geno Smith is lined up in the shotgun, two receivers to the left and two to the right. Jeremy Kerley, the target on this play, is lined up to the left in the slot position, and circled. Jeremy is going to cut to the inside of his defender and head towards the goal line. The defender doesn’t lay a finger on him, for some reason, and it costs him dearly.

At this point, Kerley is making his move to the inside and headed straight for the goal line. The safety is going to drift over on the back-end, but will he make it in time?

Geno releases the ball here, sending it right to the goal line. In perfect West Coast style, the quarterback is throwing to a spot, rather than to a player. The safety is on his way over the top, and the defensive back seems to have good coverage. However, they weren’t expecting the ball placement by Geno, and the execution by Kerley.

First of all, Geno slightly underthrows the pass. That enables Kerley to come back for it, as the defenders both roll on top. And then, Kerley makes the catch on the jump ball. That’s a lot to ask from a 5’9″ slot receiver. Great throw, great catch by Kerley.

This is a connection we will see more of in 2014.
