Jets should start Bryce Petty after bye week

The New York Jets, regardless what happens in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Rams, should start quarterback Bryce Petty after their Week 11 bye.

As the New York Jets prepare to take on the Los Angeles Rams this weekend, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is officially listed as questionable. Fitzpatrick is dealing with an MCL injury on his knee and will be a game-time decision by head coach Todd Bowles.

While there is a possibility that quarterback Bryce Petty might be making his first official NFL start come Sunday, it’s time the Jets changed their tune. After this weekend, the Jets get a bye week to rest up and more importantly, strategize for the final slate of the regular season. Their Week 12 opponent will be none other than the best team in the AFC East, the New England Patriots.

Regardless what happens against the Rams, the Jets need to start Petty sooner than later. They aren’t going to magically make the NFL Playoffs anytime soon as it’s imperative Petty gets some valuable experience during the regular season. It will give the Jets a good look at a possible franchise quarterback and give them an idea of what to build upon for next season.

Make no mistake about it, Fitzpatrick’s days of being a starting quarterback are coming to an end. Not only is he the worst quarterback in the NFL, he’s been nothing short of a disaster this season. Fitzpatrick leads the league in interceptions at 13 and continues to be on the decline.

The Jets need to head into their bye week with hopefully a win and if not, it’s more the reason to take the week off to truly assess their quarterback situation. Fitzpatrick is clearly not getting the job done and at the very least, Petty would give the Jets a much-needed spark on offense.

Petty has a better arm and surely can’t do any worse than what the football world has seen Fitzpatrick do throughout this season. It’s time the Jets stop being delusional in continuing to start Fitzpatrick and do what makes the most football sense and promote Petty.

At the end of it all, it will either show that Petty can be what this team needs in the future or give them a reason to go quarterback hunting in the offseason. Regardless, the decision needs to be made heading into the bye so Petty can put in the extra work to be ready to face one of the toughest teams in his career.
