Geno Smith Talks About Facing Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis is looking like his old self lately. According to Pro Football Focus, Revis is the second ranked cornerback in the sport.  Revis has ten pass defenses to his credit to go along with two interceptions.  His interceptions numbers are fairly low, but that is nothing new, as quarterbacks are staying away from Revis as often as possible.  The Jets will be seeing their old friend on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

Starting quarterback Geno Smith talked about facing Revis when he met with the media yesterday following practice.

Darrelle is playing at a high level, top five corner, maybe the best corner in the game. (He is) always a guy you have to be aware of. You definitely have to game plan against him and realize you can only take so many chances putting the ball in his direction. We’re going to do some things that maybe are a little different and maybe are similar to what we did in the last matchup and see how it works.

Smith agreed that staying away from Revis is a good idea:

That is always a good idea. I mean he can shut down one side of the field. He is proven in that regard. Like I said, you have to be very careful when you put the ball in his area. I am aware of that and we all are. We have to put the game plan in and see exactly how well we can counterattack some of the things they do and get the ball moving and try and execute.

Geno gave his take on what makes Darrelle Revis so good:

He is very smart, he knows his leverage, he recognizes routes and route concepts. He is a veteran player, he is very savvy, (and) he has great ball skills. The list goes on as to the things that make him the corner that he is. The key thing for us, obviously the receivers are going to have one-on-one match ups. They have to go out and do their jobs. I have to be on time, get the football out, make sure I am very precise because those guys, Revis included, (Brandon) Browner, and (Kyle) Arrington, all those guys, they make plays on the ball so you have to be spot on.

For such a young player, Geno has a healthy respect for the players that he faces. It’s not hard to respect Darrelle Revis. Well, off the field it is, but on the field, it isn’t. There aren’t many better than Revis.
