Why Jordan Travis won't factor into NY Jets' QB plans in 2025

Jordan Travis was never expected to be the future of the NY Jets. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, he was never meant to be the cornerstone of the franchise.

A big reason for drafting a player at that spot is for situations like this. The Jets will either need a bridge quarterback or a young longshot who might catch lightning in a bottle.

Based on what we last saw of him in 2023, when a leg injury ended his college career early, Travis is a young, athletic quarterback with plenty of raw upside. Is he unproven? Yes. Is he a long shot? Absolutely. But he's exactly the type of option the Jets could be considering this offseason.

There have been murmurs about whether he'll get a shot this year, and if not, why not? But we've heard nothing from him or about him. He hasn’t seen the field at all.

There’s also no clear reason why. Is it still his college injury? No one has confirmed that. Whatever the reason, the Jets have shown no public interest in giving him playing time.

NY Jets fans shouldn't expect to see Jordan Travis anytime soon

Travis had a rocky start to his college career. He began at Louisville in 2018, appearing in just three games and attempting only 14 passes. He later transferred to Florida State, where he eventually thrived.

Following consecutive strong seasons in 2021 and 2022, Travis truly broke out in 2023. He completed 64% of his passes, throwing 20 touchdowns for 2,756 yards. He also finished fifth in Heisman voting that season.

He led the Seminoles to a 10-0 record before sustaining a season-ending fractured ankle. Florida State would finish 13-1, falling to Georgia 63-3 in the Orange Bowl without him. Travis was then off to the NFL Draft.

When the Jets drafted him in the fifth round, there was optimism that he had an outside chance to develop into something — or at least get the opportunity to try. Neither has happened.

Much of that is due to Travis' college injury. It was severe and happened late in the season, so he wasn’t expected to see the field in 2024. But now would seem like the right time to get him some reps.

We got a brief update from interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich mid-season, and it wasn’t positive. He revealed setbacks in Travis' rehabilitation process. That’s not what you want to hear about a rookie coming off that kind of injury.

If there was any chance of him being an option, you would think the Jets would be saying something about him. Instead, all we are hearing about in the media are potential options in the draft and on the open market.

There has been no indication that the Jets plan to factor Travis into their plans in 2025. In a best-case scenario, Travis might be able to earn the QB3 job but don't expect him to be a legitimate starting option.
