Who is the NY Jets' kicker today in Week 10 matchup vs Cardinals?
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets believed they had finally found the long-awaited solution to their kicking woes in well-traveled veteran Greg Zuerlein. Zuerlein put together what was literally the best season by a Jets kicker in franchise history in 2023. The Jets rewarded him with a two-year extension in the offseason.
Unfortunately, kickers are notoriously volatile, and the Jets found that out the hard way this season. Zuerlein has been the NFL's worst kicker and now finds himself on the injured reserve with an "injury" as the team hopes a reset could fix his issues.
The Jets briefly replaced Zuerlein with Riley Patterson, who connected on all three of his extra-point attempts in the team's Week 9 win over the Houston Texans. However, he failed to record a single touchback and banked in one of his extra points. The Jets officially released him this week.
That means the Jets will be trotting out a different kicker for the third consecutive week when they take on the Arizona Cardinals today in Week 10. Who is the Jets' latest kicker?
Who is the NY Jets' kicker?
The Jets elevated undrafted rookie Spencer Shrader from the practice squad this week to serve as their kicker against the Cardinals. Shrader was signed to the practice squad along with Patterson prior to Week 9 and will be given a one-game audition to prove he deserves the job moving forward.
Shrader spent four years at USF before transferring to Notre Dame for his senior season. The Indiana native connected on 15-of-22 field goal attempts and set a new school record with a 55-yard field goal that year.
Shrader would sign with his hometown Indianapolis Colts shortly following the 2024 NFL Draft and would make his NFL debut in Week 1 while Matt Gay was sidelined. The 25-year-old did not attempt a field goal but made all three of his extra-point tries. He also recorded a touchback on all five kickoffs.
The Jets signed former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson to their practice squad this week, giving the team another option if Shrader struggles today. For now, however, it's Shrader's job to lose.
The Jets haven't ruled out a potential Zuerlein return at some point this season, but if Shrader manages to impress, the team won't be eager to make a change. Here's to hoping his first impression is a good one.
