The NY Jets are in the process of getting decimated by the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10, and to add insult to injury, the team lost their starting left tackle, Tyron Smith, to injury.
When the Jets took the field to start the second half, Smith was nowhere to be found. In his place was rookie first-round Pick Olu Fashanu, who has filled in for the future Hall of Famer in his absence.
The Jets quickly updated that Smith was listed as doubtful to return with a neck injury. It's unclear when the injury occurred, but it seems highly unlikely that he will return to this game, especially given the score.
This was the first week the entire starting Jets offensive line had been healthy for a game since Week 7. Alijah Vera-Tucker is back. John Simpson is back. Morgan Moses is playing through injury. Unfortunately, Tyron Smith is now out.
Tyron Smith injury update
Smith has battled injuries throughout his historic career. He hasn't started more than 13 games in a season since 2015. He had played four or fewer games in two of the last four seasons.
The Jets knew that Smith's injury history was a concern when they signed him to a team-friendly contract this past March. That's partially why the team selected Fashanu with the 11th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The expectation was that Fashanu would not only be the team's long-term solution at left tackle but he would also serve as the Jets' most important insurance policy. Now, it might be time to cash that insurance policy in.
Fashanu has started games at right tackle this season and filled in at right guard following Jake Hanson's injury in Week 10. He might receive an extended look if Smith is forced to miss significant time.
