Tyrod Taylor just erased any doubt about Justin Fields’ Jets job security. With Fields sidelined by a concussion, Taylor got the Week 3 start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the results so far could not have been uglier.
The Jets went into halftime trailing 20-6, largely undone by Taylor’s brutal performance. His struggles were capped off in the worst possible fashion, an ugly pick-six right before the half that turned a potentially manageable game into a lopsided one.
Taylor and the Jets averaged just 2.8 yards per carry over the first two quarters of the game, with the veteran quarterback finishing the half with 55 passing yards. He completed 10-of-16 passes, with just one completion longer than nine yards.
For a team already searching for answers on offense, Taylor’s first-half showing only reinforced one thing. Justin Fields has nothing to worry about when it comes to his starting job.
Tyrod Taylor is proving he's not a threat to Justin Fields' job
Fields put together one of the best performances of his NFL career in his Jets debut a couple of weeks ago. The former Chicago Bears QB completed 16-of-22 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown, while adding 48 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
His 0.68 EPA per attempt was the highest of his NFL career, as was his stellar 90.4 Pro Football Focus passing grade. Jets fans were understandably optimistic about Fields and the offense, but that all came crashing down in Week 2.
Fields followed arguably the best game of his career with his worst, completing just 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards in last week's embarrassing 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He'd leave the game in the fourth quarter with a concussion and was replaced by Taylor.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was noncommittal on Fields’ job security this week, sidestepping a question about his philosophy on players losing starting jobs to injury.
But given Taylor's performance to start this game, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Fields isn't asked to start once he clears concussion protocol. In fact, if Taylor continues to struggle, it's possible the Jets will give undrafted rookie Brady Cook a chance to prove his worth.
One thing is painfully obvious, though: Tyrod Taylor does not look like the solution for this Jets offense. Justin Fields should be given his job back once he returns.
