The New York Jets currently have Garrett Wilson in line for another standout season at wide receiver, a promising tertiary piece in Adonai Mitchell, and no one who will be expected to contribute as a pass-catcher beyond a limited role in the 2026 season.
This has made it a necessity for Darren Mougey to use one of his top four picks in the 2026 NFL Draft on a standout wide receiver. If the Jets wait until Day 2, there are plenty of prospects who could fall into their laps. Their pick at No. 44 could come down to what type of receiver Mougey wants.
If he wants a smaller speedster who makes plays as a runner, the Jets may target Georgia's Zachariah Branch. A bigger player like Notre Dame's Malachi Fields could also be in the running if the Jets want some size. These two players are complete opposites, but they could both thrive in New York.
Jets could target WRs Zachariah Branch, Malachi Fields in 2026 NFL Draft
Jets fans may not be interested in Branch after another Georgia speedster, Arian Smith, did next to nothing as a rookie. Amassing most of his production on screens is concerning as well, but that may be the fault of a lackluster Georgia scheme. At his best, Branch's speed can change the tenor of an offense.
The USC transfer will immediately be one of the 15 or 20 fastest players in the NFL when he gets drafted. His verticality was utilized properly at USC, and if Frank Reich blends his playmaking on short passes well with that deep threat potential, Branch could be a great running mate for Wilson.
Fields might be more Reich's speed, as he has historically placed an emphasis on receivers with size and great hands. A boundary receiver with amazing ball skills and solid route-running, Fields is only being held back by his athletic traits.
Fields ran a slower-than-expected 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, and he is never going to be a speed demon on the outside. Any team that takes him may need to be aware of his limitations.
Branch would likely take ownership of the slot role right away, keeping Wilson and Mitchell on the outside. While Fields will need to play exclusively on the outside, which may force one of those two to the slot permanently, there are avenues to success in both orientations for this offense.
The Jets need to come out of this Draft with multiple pass-catchers. Even if they choose to pass on some of the bigger names early in the order, Mougey could strike gold on Day 2 if he managed to land one of these dynamos with a mid-round pick that he didn't even own until some October trades.
