The Jets somehow snuck the NFL's best preseason cornerback onto their practice squad

The New York Jets had several standouts from the preseason, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Luckily, they were able to bring a good majority of them back to the practice squad, allowing their development to continue in New York.

Undrafted free agent cornerback Mory Bamba, who was unfortunately limited to one preseason game due to injury, is back on the practice squad. Bamba broke up four passes, including a touchdown-saving PBU against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and has since gone by "Bamba Island," even by Aaron Glenn.

Then, of course, there's edge Nate Lynn, who signed with the Jets just a few weeks ago. He recorded three sacks in two preseason games for New York and was someone who had a legitimate chance to make the 53-man roster. Lynn was waived, but similar to Bamba, made his way to the practice squad.

But there was one other Jets defender who was elite throughout preseason action, and he also managed to slip through waivers and fall right back into New York's lap, and that's cornerback Samuel Womack III, a veteran defensive back entering his second season with the Green & White.

Womack had the best preseason of any cornerback in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, as pointed out by The Jet Press' own Justin Fried. He finished with an overall grade of 91.1 and allowed a passer rating of only 2.8 when targeted in coverage.

Of course, it was only preseason action, so it's not like this performance will automatically translate to the regular season if Womack is elevated from the practice squad at any point in 2026. But it's important to have quality veteran depth nonetheless, and that's exactly what Womack is.

The former fifth-round draft pick in 2022 has 46 career NFL games under his belt, including 11 starts. He's recorded 73 tackles, three interceptions, and 13 pass breakups over four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, and Jets.

Cornerback is a position where New York is relatively deep. Brandon Stephens and Azareye'h Thomas are the primary starters on the outside, with Nahshon Wright and Qwan'tez Stiggers as their backups. If any injuries start to crop up, Womack will likely be the first man up.

After an elite preseason outing, Jets fans can take solace in the fact that they have a quality insurance policy in place on the practice squad.
