The Jets’ Cade Klubnik hype train just got Aaron Glenn’s endorsement

Aaron Glenn might not be one for cliches and boring catchphrases, but he nonetheless knows exactly what New York Jets fans want to hear in training camp.

Much of the early attention has been on rookie edge rusher David Bailey, who dominated during the first two practice sessions. Young quarterback Cade Klubnik has also drawn strong reviews following an offseason of mounting hype from both fans and media members.

Klubnik turned heads after quickly forming a connection with Garrett Wilson and delivering a pinpoint throw to Arian Smith in double coverage. Glenn also came away impressed by Klubnik rebounding from an incomplete pass. 

“We know the hills that he’s had in his college career,” Glenn said, “and that’s the thing that we’re intrigued by him, because he was able to bounce back and continue to go, and to me, that shows leadership too.”

Cade Klubnik continues to generate significant buzz ahead of the preseason

Klubnik reportedly missed only one throw during 7-on-7 drills, and that came on a drop by rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

Despite the social media threads suggesting otherwise, Geno Smith is all but a lock to start Week 1. Glenn confirmed as much when the Jets acquired the 14-year veteran back in March. 

The only way we’ll see Klubnik play meaningful snaps in September is if Smith cannot play. However, Glenn and the Jets continue to create the impression that the fourth-round pick could realistically earn the backup job over Bailey Zappe, which is slightly surprising. But at least Klubnik is trying to maximize every rep he gets, which is far easier said than done when rookies are involved. 

All signs initially pointed to Zappe being the definite backup, especially after Russell Wilson opted to retire last month. The Jets have not been credibly linked to other possible No. 2 quarterbacks, though that could obviously change depending on what happens with the likes of the Titans’ Will Levis or the Steelers’ Mason Rudolph.

For now, let’s plan on seeing Klubnik take full advantage of however much he plays against the Buccaneers in two weeks. Zappe and Brady Cook are the only other quarterbacks on the roster who’d potentially play more than a couple of drives in the preseason opener. 

Besides, we’re almost at the point of asking who needs Arch Manning or Trinidad Chambliss when you have Cade Klubnik?
