In the latest episode of The Jet Press Podcast, Justin Fried and Mike Luciano discuss Xavier Gipson's release, Justin Fields' impressive New York Jets debut, Brandon Stephens' struggles, the team's upcoming Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills, and more.
The show started with a discussion about the Jets' decision to release Gipson following his fumble woes in Sunday's Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the move likely should have been made prior to Week 1, both Justin and Mike agreed it was better late than never.
Head coach Aaron Glenn sent a message to the Jets locker room with the Gipson release, but who will take his place? We discussed potential replacements, including new additions Isaiah Williams and Keilan Robinson.
That was followed by the return of the Gang Green Stat Machine, a segment devoted to examining a series of interesting stats from the Jets' previous game. The segment kicked off with Armand Membou's brilliance in Week 1.
Membou was not only Pro Football Focus' highest-graded offensive lineman in Week 1, but his 89.0 grade is the highest by any rookie offensive lineman in a debut since PFF started tracking data in 2006.
But the Jets' rookie wasn't the only one who impressed on Sunday. The likes of Justin Fields, Sauce Gardner, and Quinnen Williams were all outstanding in their 2025 debuts, with Fields possibly putting together the best game of his NFL career.
Gardner and Williams both put together two of the most impressive games of their respective careers as well. Unfortunately, both were overshadowed on defense by a miserable performance from Brandon Stephens.
Stephens allowed five catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns and was one of the biggest reasons why the Jets were unable to secure the win. Is it already time for Azareye'h Thomas? Justin and Mike break it all down.
Finally, we spent the last few minutes of the show analyzing the Jets' upcoming Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills. Is there any way the Jets can pull off the shock upset? It's definitely possible, and we broke down the game plan the Jets should employ.
