In the latest episode of The Jet Press Podcast, Justin Fried discussed the last two days of New York Jets joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and previewed the team's upcoming preseason opener this Friday.
The show started with a discussion about Geno Smith, who had arguably his worst practice of the summer on Tuesday before bouncing back with a better showing on Wednesday.
Justin and Mike discussed how much stock Jets fans should put into the bad day and why the response was encouraging as Smith continues to settle into the offense.
Rookie Cade Klubnik also provided one of Wednesday’s biggest highlights, connecting with Arian Smith on a 50-yard touchdown. The fourth-round pick has experienced the expected ups and downs this summer, but he has largely looked the part of an NFL quarterback.
Justin and Mike broke down his progress and what fans should expect when Klubnik takes the field in Friday’s preseason opener against Todd Bowles and the Buccaneers.
David Bailey remains one of the most encouraging stories of Jets camp. The rookie edge rusher may have been the Jets’ best player across the two joint practices against a Buccaneers offensive line missing Tristan Wirfs.
The guys also discussed Armand Membou’s matchup with Buccaneers rookie Rueben Bain Jr., the state of the Jets’ cornerback room and Dane Belton seemingly moving ahead of Andre Cisco on the safety depth chart.
One of the episode’s bigger debates centered around Omar Cooper Jr. and Isaiah Williams. Williams has been one of the Jets’ breakout performers this summer and is making a legitimate push for the WR3 job.
Cooper has been alright, but Justin believes there is a real chance Williams could pass the rookie before Week 1, while Mike remains a little more skeptical. This will be an interesting battle to watch.
