In the latest episode of The Jet Press Podcast, Justin Fried and Mike Luciano discuss the full New York Jets 53-man roster in detail, break down the team's waiver-wire moves, and evaluate the Jets' practice squad additions.
The show started with a discussion about the Jets' defensive tackle room, largely focusing on the altered landscape following the additions of Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs. Former UDFA Leonard Taylor III was also a notable addition to the 53-man roster.
From there, Justin and Mike went through position-by-position to discuss the team's 53-man roster and reported practice squad (at the time of recording). Brady Cook made the practice squad as QB3, while Adrian Martinez reunited with Robert Saleh as the new 49ers practice squad quarterback.
The wide receiver room was a contentious discussion point this summer, as none of Brandon Smith, Jamaal Pritchett, or Quentin Skinner made the initial roster. All three were re-signed to the practice squad, along with surprise cut Tyler Johnson (who was released after the recording of this video).
Justin and Mike broke down the decision to keep Xavier Gipson over Pritchett, as well as the reasons why Smith and Skinner were left off the 53.
The Jets claimed former Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods off waivers, giving the team five players in the position group, including hybrid fullback Andrew Beck. We discussed Woods' addition and what this means for the tight end room.
The Jets also claimed undrafted rookie offensive tackle Esa Pole off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. Pole had a top-30 visit with the Jets before the draft and is an intriguing upside addition to the team's offensive line.
The team's front-seven also had a few surprises, most notably Zaire Barnes, who was later released to make room for waiver claim Cam Jones. Jones is an experienced special-teamer who could push Marcelino McCrary-Ball for the third linebacker job.
The Jets are thin at cornerback after losing Jarrick Bernard-Converse via waivers to the Cleveland Browns. Justin and Mike debated the Bernard-Converse cut and how significant it will be to the Jets' season. There were no real surprises in the safety or specialists units.
