Texas Tech QB Behren Morton details 'super cool' pre-draft interview with Jets

Morton is likely a Day 3 pick, though his injury history could scare teams away.

Of all the clichés about the NFL Combine and the overall pre-draft process, fans frequently hear that performances and meetings are “job interviews.”

Not only did Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton indeed refer to his meeting with the New York Jets as an “interview,” but he was more than willing to share his experience.

Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Morton confirmed that he met with the Jets ahead of his Pro Day. The 24-year-old Morton was a three-time All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention selection and attended the combine earlier this year.

“We did some install to learn the offense,” Morton said of his time with the Jets. “We did the install with their GM, head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach. That was super cool to do.”

Morton added that he had a top-30 visit with the Jets, who are widely expected to take a quarterback in next week’s draft.

What to know about Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton

Morton brings significant experience to the NFL, having played in 43 games (36 starts) with the Red Raiders. He completed 62.8% of his passes for nearly 9,000 yards and an impressive 71-28 TD-INT ratio.

However, Morton is projected as a late-round pick, in part because of his lengthy injury history.

Morton certainly kept the Texas Tech trainers busy, playing the 2023 and 2024 seasons with a Grade 3 AC joint sprain of his throwing shoulder.

Somehow, Morton battled through a hairline fracture in his right leg through the second half of last year, leading the Red Raiders to their first CFP appearance. Unfortunately for Morton and Texas Tech, the Red Raiders’ season ended with a 23-0 Orange Bowl loss to Oregon.

Morton would certainly be an interesting Day 3 pick for the Jets, especially given how frequently they’ve been linked to Alabama’s Ty Simpson.

Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza is the presumptive No. 1 pick, with Simpson likely to be the second quarterback selected. Simpson’s projected draft range is anywhere from the mid-teens to early in the second round.

The Jets have also reportedly met with multiple quarterbacks, including Penn State’s Drew Allar, Miami’s Carson Beck, and LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, following the combine.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn previously confirmed that Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback. Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook remain on the roster as backups.
